Buying a Secondhand Used Electric Bed, Hoist, Pressure Relief Mattress or Bedroom Accessory

Buying a secondhand electric bed, hoist or pressure relieving mattress, can be a much cheaper way of finding a solution to your bedroom and sleeping problems, but since the selection of products on offer is more limited, you must make sure that you do not rush into buying the first bed, mattress or hoist you find, and must avoid compromising your safety and mobility needs.

When looking at an electric bed, portable hoist, ceiling hoist, or pressure relieving mattress, you must first check that the product you are buying is in good working order. You may have certain consumer rights when buying secondhand; for example, the seller must accurately describe what they are selling; and you should be made fully aware of any faults or problems that need attention. If possible, obtain a description in writing of the product from the seller before you buy so that, should you find any faults, you can get your money back more easily.

There are two main sources of used and secondhand electric beds, portable hoists, ceiling hoists or pressure relieving mattresses: equipment retailers and private individuals.

Some commercial suppliers also buy unwanted or little used electric beds, portable hoists, ceiling hoists or pressure relieving mattresses, recondition them, and then offer them for sale with a short guarantee of, for example, three months. Buying secondhand from an electric bed, portable hoist, ceiling hoist or pressure relieving mattress retailer is generally more expensive than buying from a private individual, but the product is likely to have been serviced and should be in reasonable working order.

Examples of Second Hand Used Electric Beds, Portable Hoists, Ceiling Hoists or Pressure Relieving Mattresses Sold in the Forum

The forum has a selection of used, second hand electric beds, portable hoists, ceiling hoists or pressure relieving mattresses and bedroom accessories.

Electric Beds: are usually used by people with a neuromuscular condition. The disability usually results in severe arm weakness, so they are unable to push down through their arms to raise their bottom to transfer sideways. A sliding board will help the process of transferring from and to a wheelchair, particularly if it is used ‘downhill’, and the height adjustability will make this possible.

Electric beds usually have the ability to raise the person in bed to a sitting position from laying flat. The whole bed may also raise, to help reduce the stress on carers backs whilst caring for the disabled person.

Ceiling Hoists: run along permanently fixed tracks mounted in the ceiling. Ceiling hoists do not occupy floor space as a mobile hoist does, and they may be operated by the user independently - which is not possible with any floor standing system.

In selecting a ceiling hoist system, thought also needs to be given to structural considerations: ceiling joists may need to be reinforced, and doorways altered, to accommodate the track. Most ceiling track systems are powered by mains electricity for the transfer, with either a manual or powered raising and lowering mechanism. There will either be a battery back-up for emergencies, or a manual wind-down facility, to enable the client to be lowered to a flat surface.

Mobile hoists: are self-contained units, mobile hoists don't require any track installation on the floor or in the ceiling, so offer more flexibility of use. They do, however, require carefull use by the carer, and are not designed for moving people long distances: a wheelchair or showerchair is better for this, or a ceiling track hoist as described above.

In choosing a mobile hoist, thought needs to be given to the room where it will be used: whether there is enough space to manoeuvre the hoist into the right position; if the legs of the hoist will fit under or around any furniture, such as bed, bath or chair; whether the floor surface is smooth enough to allow it to operate easily: thick carpet or threshold strips are difficult to move over.
