On Hospital Bed Rest, Yuck Options

So, about 2 weeks ago I had a doctors appointment (not my regular OB, but the high risk doctor I see for all my ultrasounds, simply because they have better equipment than my regular OB). Anyway, they realized that my cervix had shortened again, even after the cerclage. I was also dilated to about 1 to 1.5 centimeters. They also didn't like the fact that I was having contractions (non painful ones) throughout the day from about the time I got the cerclage. Off to the hospital I went.

The crappy thing was that my regular OB was out of town for a week and I had another doctor I never met (she liked to call me Fergie ... yeah I didn't like her very much). The high risk doctor checked me into the hospital saying that I was dilating and having contractions, not exactly what was happening ... and that's when they started the heavy drugs that I didn't really need. UG! The hardest was the IV with magnesium sulfate, apparently it prevents brain bleeds in babies when you deliver early. But considering I wasn't going into preterm labor it was more like lets be more safe than sorry. But crap, that drug messed me up. It's a very strong muscle relaxant and every time I sneezed, coughed or barfed (oh yes, the drug made me terribly nauseous), I peed myself. Fun. I also had to call the nurse every time I had to use my little bedside commode because I was scared of falling because my muscles were like jelly.

After 24 hours I was finally off the magnesium sulfate. They gave me steroid shots that help develop the babies lungs and started to monitor me with ultrasound heart monitors as well as a contraction monitor. Once they discovered that I wasn't going into preterm labor and my contractions were minor, they stopped all the drugs - yay! But I'll still need to be in the hospital to be monitored.

I get monitored in the morning around 9 for 30 minutes and then at night around 9 for 30 minutes. Some nurses are better than others at not only finding the babies with the monitors and also remembering that they have to come and unhook me after 30 mins. Just today I was on this morning for about and hour and a half - stupid flaky nurse.

The bed rest is okay, it's much like being at home. I have a private room with a decent view and also a private bathroom. I can shower every other day and move around for a bit too. Hubby visits me everyday and so does my mom. My belly is getting bigger, although I haven't gained that much weight. So far I've only gained a little over 10 pounds and I'm 2 days after 28 weeks. The babies are weighing great, who knew I wasn't going to pack on the pounds. You'd think it was because of the hospital food, but fortunately the food is pretty decent. Of course, I always kind of liked airplane food ... so who am I to judge.

The babies move around all the time and it's fun to see and feel my belly moving. They make the nurses laugh when they put on the monitors.

So, today I'm 2 days past 28 weeks and my doctor says we'll throw a party at 32 weeks. I'm hoping to go to at least 34 weeks.

Ooo, hubby just brought me a green tea frapicinno from starbucks and the world series is on ...

Sorry to hear you're stuck in the hospital, K.,, but if that's what it takes for both you and the boys to stay healthy,,, then that's the way it will be.

I don't pray,, but if that string theory thing means anything, then all the good vibrations I'm sending should do some good,,, I hope.

You like hospital and airplane food???? I guess you do need a hospital stay,,, but I'm thinking mental.

Another five weeks and five days,,,, no prob. A month after delivery of those little guys and you'll be dreaming of a bunch of nurses taking care of things.

Hang in there, K,,, it'll be worth it.

I am sorry that you are in the hospital and I hope the time will go fast for you. My little guy is 3 months old already and I can't believe how fast the time has gone. One day, this time will seem short to you but not now!:)

I am so glad you're writing again. You gave us a scare... Thankgoodness that all is going well again. I hope your regular OB gets back soon. There is not much fun to being in the bed all day..... except for being waited on all day, breakfast, lunch and dinner in bed, an occassional floral arrangement, friends and famliy visiting you all day, your own remote, no housework, no dishes, no dirty floors, no ironing, no dirty laundry, no grocery shopping, no cleaning what-so-ever, hmmmmmmmm, sounds like you should enjoy what life passes you, and take the time God has given you to take care of the boys and especially yourself. I realize its been pretty tough, but take a few deep breaths, and you'll be enjoying the prancing of little feet in no time. They are so lucky to have a great mom like you. Take care. Give their special dad a hug from all of us who care and share in your new adventuress.
