I have used a gel "only" wheelchair cushion in the past. I have been online for hours trying to find one. My skin is breaking down from not using a cushion. The low profile gel cushion is easy to use and sling on to the seat when transferring in and out of car, etc.
The cushion should only be1-1.5 inches high. Higher cushions make it harder to transfer.
Please advise on manuf. of gel only cushion. The one's that are made with foam and other material are too thick (high).
This is my first time on this site.

Have you ever tried a ROHO? I use the low profile one no p s . Welcome

I also use the ROHO low profile. It's a terrific cushion in my opinion.

I totally agree that the ROHO is one of the best. I've been on one for 4 years and the best thing about the ROHO is that is provides the pressure relief for you because you are basically sitting on air. I don't think about shifting every half hour. I've never had a pressure issue whatsoever to date.

I use an invacare Flotech Solution, which is without doubt the best cushion Ive ever had. Its a gel cushion and is sooooo cumfy!! I found I felt unstable with a Roho as well.

I have to agree with Lucydog here..I have a Flotech lite visco (FLV), have had this one for about 9 months now and its really good. I had to have a low profile cushion as deeper cushions seemed to place me too high above my side guards and I felt too unstable..The FLV is good in that it has pommel and is contoured like the plain Flotech, yet is a lower profile. It has the several types of foam and doesn't take long to soften up ( like my last cushion did after being in the car or something). The FLV isn't a gel cushion though. I tried the gel version (along with all sorts of cushions from Roho, Jay to little known honeycomb cushions) and the Invacare FLV was the only one I didn't wind up with skin integrity compromise with. FWIW as a Nurse I also found that Invacare often provided the best solutions in a clinical setting for posture and seating, I hate the name INVACARE but have to admit I think they make good cushions..

For me, I do not prefer the roho cushion. A solid gel without foam is much better. Do you know of one? Thanks so much for the response.

Lucy Dog,
I am totally new @ responding on chat rooms. However, I will check your blog (which I am not familiar with, either) when I have more time.

How do I respond without your previous reply showing up again? Thanks for all your information.
Indeed, I will research the information. Lower profile is what I want!

Me I use a quadtro high profile cushion from roho which I believe are the best cushions for dealing with skin breakdown.

I use the Varilite Zoid, it's a air cushion, but nothing like the ROHO. I got it specifically for the height and weight. 1.9 lbs is as light as they come for cushions and 2.9 inch's tall fully inflated, with mine where I like it, it might be 1.5 inch's tall.

i guess if u want jell, it'd have to be jay wouldnt it, there about the best i owned......

but if u already have a pressure sore, then u better nip that in the bud , i mean now...........bettter do a roho.......they'll even make the cells where they'll drop out, i have 2 especially made for me..........thru roho.....

My gf uses a ROHO air cushion. She likes it.

We've got a review of a whole range of different cushions in our magazine (out next month) - this may be helpful.

It depends what you're looking for in a seat cushion as there are many out there. Personally I've used Flotech's, ROHO's, Jay's, and a few others. I'm currently rocking a Supracore Stimulite Sport. I've found that my skin is pretty impervious to breakdown as long as I keep with my weight shifts. The Supracore is very light and has a honeycomb pattern which is great to let your butt breathe! There is a lot of different factors that play into what kind of cushion is best for you though. Depends on the wheelchair and what you're looking to do. As well as the tendencies of your skin.
I'd take a look at:
