Anyone have any idea's to get over my smoking habit? I know, cold turkey, just put the damn things down right? Been there, tried that many times.
Prices have gone through the roof, even for my Pall Malls so I guess it is time to quit.
My neurosurgeon also informed me that they can cause spasms due to the stimulant effect of nicotine, don't know how true this is.

i feel ur pain with the prices...my husband is trying to quit right now too....ive heard real good things about chantex, its a prescribed pill that helps. the patches cause nightmares so try not to use them at night! i smoked up until my accident..i figured if i cant hold a cigarette then i didnt need to smoke it so i quit (so much easier with all the medication i was on at the time!)
good luck to ya!

Don't be foolish.
All good Americans smoke. It's the national past-time, good for the economy, helps the environment (ashes are good for plant life, the smoke strengthens the ozone layer ) and the taxes it generates help pay for the healthcare so badly needed for all the sissy's who keep getting lung cancer. ( Probably caused by asbestos ) Add to that all the employment opportunities given by the tobacco companies and what have ya got? A whole lotta smokin' goin' on!
Are we beginning to get the logic here?
So let's get with the program there kiddo, straighten up, fly right, do what's best. Fer you. Fer the rest of humanity.
Let's all smoke more cigarettes. Today. Tomorrow. Every day.
It's what jeezuz would do.
And we all wanna do what jeezuz would do. Right?
On a more somber note.
The patch works, but yup, be ready for some weird ass dreams. I like 'em myself but they're not for every one.
Tried the gum too. I like it cuz it takes care of two of the habits formed by smoking. The addiction to nicotine, and the oral fixation you get from sticking something in yer mouth every ten seconds. Find something to do with your hands at the same time ( I like fondling little bo...oops I mean playing with a pencil ) and you have a three pronged attack against the horrors of nicotine addiction.
Then take the cost of a pack o' butt-ski's and put it in a jar each day. At the end of a year take the money and send it to me. I'll buy you a nice reward for quitting something you shouldn't have started doing in the first place. Promise.
And never tell people OR yourself that you're "trying" to quit. That gives you an automatic out for failure, sabotaging your project from the get-go.
Yer not trying to quit. YOU'VE QUIT, GODDAMNIT!
You could also try chewing. Mom chewed "Beachnut" till the day she died. Mouth cancer, poor thing. Terrible way to go. Always wondered how she got it.
Anywho. I'm dyin' for a smoke so I'm gonna run.
Best o' luck to ya there slim,
E-dog cough, cough.

Hi Dave,
I did it with patches. In fact I could not have done it without them. I only ever wore them during the day and I was amazed how quickly I found I was forgetting to stick one on. Only a matter of weeks. Soon after that I just carried some around with me and put one on when I got desperate and very soon after that phase, I cut them in half and only used half if in real need. That rarely happened.
The whole thing took less than three months but I carried half a patch round in my wallet - just in case - for another month or so.
I started smoking at about 14 years, and graduated to full strength fags, rolling baccy, cigars and a pipe, often carrying these all around at the same time! You could say I was a confirmed smoker until I quit 34 years later. Incidentally I have just been diagnosed as having Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease as a result. You really don't want it.
Within weeks the smell of someone else's smoke will become extremely offensive to you. You will probably start apologising to all the non-smokers you insisted on smoking near for so many years when you realize just how bad you smelt.
Like E-dog says, don't think of trying to quit. Do it.

I know quite a few people who have tried quitting using Zyban. Some have done well on it and successfully quit, some have started up again shortly after stopping the Zyban. The thing that I've heard with Zyban is that you still have to use a significant amount of willpower--as you would with quitting any habit--and not rely completely on the drug. I'm not even sure if you guys have Zyban over in the States but it may be worth looking into for you. I've never been a smoker but my ex husband has been trying to quit for almost a decade now and cold turkey didn't work for him either. He did really well while he was on the Zyban but then when he got off it, he started smoking again--though significantly less. I think he only smokes like 4 or 5 a day now as opposed to something like a pack a day.

I, like gretbeard, smoked from 14,, and a pack a day or more from 18 till I quit the last time, at 50. I tried the gum,, the patches,,even tried hypnosis when I was in my thirties.
The only thing that really works for anyone is the real desire. Nothing works if you don't have that,,, and any of the above will work if you do. I quit many times,,,, several times for a month or so,, twice for over six monthes,, one time for just over a year,, and so far, for 12 years this time. Nothing is absolute,, and you only quit until your next smoke.
I don't intend to smoke again,,, but you never know,,, oh,, and by the way,, I still get the urge.
You want to quit? Quit! even if it's just for one hour,,,, this time,,, and don't stop trying just because you smoke one,, or one pack..
Even if you don't stop completely,,,, less is still better,,, only buy one pack at a time,,, don't bum,,, when the pack is empty, try to wait till the next day to buy another.
One more thing,,,, if you do manage to give them up,,, you'll gain about 10% of your body weight in the next month or two. You might lose it again,,, or you might not. You gotta decide which is worse for you,,, the smoke or the weight,,,
Good luck, Dave,,, it'll be tough and you WILL be miserable to be around......... even worse than usual.

Went to doc's today for a renewal on my "evil medicine"
Only 50 bucks if you're a vet!
Doc, a cutie from who knows where, looks Indian I think, told me about E-cigarettes.
Looks like a ciggy, tastes like one too. Little red lite on the end. Connects to a battery pak.
You get the nicotine without the harmful tars and shit that cause health problems.
Google it.
I even stumbled onto a forum where people who use the damn things talk about it. Talk about not having a life!
vaporcig.com is one brand, but there are cheaper ones out there.
Try "chew". Mom loved her Beachnut. Died with a chew in her mouth while shootin' it out with 18 Feds up in the Dakotas a while back.
Took out twelve o' the suckers 'for they lobed in gas n' dynamite. She come a runnin' out o' there all hell bent fer leather guns a blazin', showin' her teeth, screamin' like a banshee on goofballs. Took 33 45. caliber ball rounds to finally take her down. Never ferget it.
"Lookit her" I sez, as she double taps three of 'em, center mass "that's my mama, goddamnit!"

Dave,
lets be honest, deep down, you really do not want to quit!
A lot of people complain to me about quitting smoking, but I always tell them that they are laying themselves. Either you quit or not! There is no: "I wanted to quit but I can't do it"
No, dude, you don't want to quit. It’s simple like that.
Don't get me wrong, it's not easy, but it's doable if you really want it.
I've quit smoking while I was drinking coffee with my family, just like that. I gave my cigarette pack to my brother and I've said: " I'm done with it", because I really wanted to do quit. That was 12 years ago and I've never lighted up again and I never will. If this helps, that's how you do it! Good luck bud.

I only smoked for ten years but what did it for me was getting angry. It dawned on me one day when i had to make the choice to either get a pack of cigs or a gallon of milk that the damn things had complete control of me. And if there's one thing i cant stand it is being controlled. So from that point on it was a battle versus a worthy and powerful adversary-- one that could make something as disgusting as inhaling tobacco not only pleasurable but mandatory. Now I've broken the habit and realize that yes cigs do taste and make ya feel like shit.

Yo Yaz,
You guys from Slobatelvania are a lot tougher and more disciplined than us American sissies. Growing up in the mountainous regions of some horrific communist fourth world country where you never know when the KGB will force their way in and take you to some gulag for a thousand years makes you tough as nails. We on the other hand will bitch and moan for a week if we break a finger nail. At least I will.
Damn keyboard is hurting my finger tips something awful, I gotta go smoke a joint.

Well you're about the age I was when I quit.

I thought I'd got away with it until this year's diagnosis of lung disease.

You might be lucky, but I wouldn't leave it much longer before you make your mind up.

Thanks. So do I. At the moment, I just get a bit breathless at times - like asthma. I'll be sucking on various inhalers for the rest of my days and hoping it won't get worse.

I have been smoking for 11 years, pack a day. Thats 20 cigarettes in a pack, 365 days a year for 11 years (20x365x11) thats 80300 cigarettes divided by 365 would be 220 years.....
According to that i should have been dead some time around 1789...

I have smoked most of my life (Whole family HEAVY SMOKERS) & for the last twenty or more years have smoked twenty five gram pack of tobacco per day, never in a million years did I think I would ever give it up but I sort of have (still have the very odd joint to help me sleep)
Well not smoked now for two months thanks to the Nicotinell patches, these have worked a treat for me.....SO FAR..!
Must add only giving up for pending op
I've just started taking Champix, I'm on day 4 ;) Will be giving up on day 9, and will take the drug till day 15!! It works by turning off the specific nicotine receptors in your brain, basically stopping the satisfaction feeling from smoking.
http://www.champixinfo.co.uk/Pfizer want you to take it for alot longer, but my doctor says that loads of ppl have given up on the first packet. Thing with these types of brain chemical changing drugs, is you dont want it to change anything that shouldnt be changed, so they won't hand it out if your suicidal etc, as it can make some mental health issues worsen. My GP said that if I only take it for 15 days, I shouldnt get any other the reported problems associated with taking it. He also said that my trauma related depression that I was in for a couple of yrs after my injury was very different from someonewho is a depressive person, so it shouldn't make me too nasty and unbearable to live with for the short term ;) ehhehehe
After telling a few of my friends about it, 5 of us are taking it, all just for the 15 days, and all giving up on day 9 .. so there is some motivation there.
