Ben, sounds like they mean a buildup of fluid, called a Syrinx. It causes problems with pressure on your spine. . . . also called Syringomyelia.
There are many threads here regarding this as well, if this is in fact what you have. Otherwise, you may have to wait for what the Neuro has to say.

I have a Syrinx below my injury (c5-c7) plus fluid pressure buildup above my injury, my nuro surgeon regards these as 2 seperate issues the syrinx will be drained and the pressure buildup is caused by scar tissue preventing the unrestricted flow of the fluid and this will be corrected by installing drainage shunts. I first noticed problems when Istarted to loose strength in my right hand,I now have little strength left in my fingers and overall my total strength has dimished severly along with my balance I'm due to have surgery in 2 weeks then it's hard work to build back the strength and get me back to where I was 4 months ago.
