Full Version: Average Stay In Hospital For A Quadriplegic
Quadriplegic & Paraplegic Spinal Cord Injuries > Disabled Living & Spinal Cord Injuries > Spinal Cord Injury Health Issues

That would have been super if our daughter had been able to stay in the hospital 6 to 8 mos. Typically the stay is only 2 mos. of rehab in hospital after injury, and if you can get insurance to pay for no more than 50 PT visits per yr. What a joke. A quadriplegic should have ongoing PT for the duration of their condition. Until people can get insurance companies to realize this is a necessary PT to keep them from having other medical issues and keeping them out of the hospital we are going to be stuck with substandard PT for the disabled. Look at all the PT facilities for people in Europe and they don't even pay for the medical insurance. I'm sorry I sound bitter, but that's the cold hard facts of what our family is going through and will be going through for our daughter. We found a facility called Roll 2 Walk in Austin and in order for her to attend the program it's going to cost us more than what we can afford. There goes our retirement. seehearspeak.gif

Yeah spent 5 months at POWH i only got to leave once they were satisfied i could do things and I had my equipment. it would have been shorter but i broke my left wrist quite badly so I had to wait for that to fully heal before starting with rehab.

Hi,
Here is SA, my son was a month in ICU and 3 months in Rehab before his insurance cut us loose. Since then he has uped his insurance cover and he now goes to therapy 5 days a week ( sometimes more than one type in a day). Without the exercise and stimulation, even just the forced trip out of the house, I know that he would not have got as far as he has.
Sam 4012 sounds as if it is mom or dad writing... welcome to the club that we never wanted to be members of. This is a great group to gain knowledge, vent frustrations and sometimes just have a laugh with E Dog.

Yes,
I'm mom and caregiver/attendant for our daughter c5/c6 injured 2007. Check out forum news at Care Cure sci.rutgers.edu. Dr. Young gives monthly updates on stem cell trials and treatments. There are many people there that are also great listeners. Texas basically sucks when it comes to even considering the use of clinical trials for stem cell. The governor says he's all for it to create a state with ground breaking biomedical technology, but first they need to stop telling people that embryonic stem cell will never be used in the state of Texas. All they want to use in clinical trials is adult stem cell. Well, adult stem cell will not repair a person that has spinal cord injury. There's no reconnecting of the nerve endings and myelin. I take my daughter to physical therapy once a week. She's going to start her driver's training and have a special vehicle fixed up that she can drive. I'm hoping by next school semester she will be driving herself and gaining some more independence for herself since she's going to be 24 yrs. old.

I have heard nothing but great things about the Roll2Walk program. I hope your daughter gets the best out of it that she can.

yeah, we have it pretty good in Australia. When he first had his accident my dad spent 3 months in hospital and then a further 6 months in a spinal rehab hospital, gradually going from weekends home to home for good. He got all the equipment etc he needed.

He's been in hospital now with his 3rd bout of pneumonia (in as many years) and whenever mum asks when he's coming home the Dr goes "Oh, not until he's better, another week or two at least" they're in no hurry for him to leave.

I see in the news they're thinking of scrapping our public health care system though .... dunno.gif
