Full Version: Accessible Fitness Equipment Is Nominated For A James Dyson Award - Needs Your Help!
Quadriplegic & Paraplegic Spinal Cord Injuries > Disabled Living & Spinal Cord Injuries > Adaptive Equipment, Home Adaptations, Clothing & Tips
designer
Hey Everyone,

The James Dyson Award is an annual international competition which showcases new concepts and designs to help improve the lives of others. This year, I have entered my concept for fitness equipment that caters to those with various disabilities and able body users alike: The Access. I have been working on this product for 3 years trying to provide a solution to the ridiculous lack of accessible fitness equipment in our public health centers. I have recently founded a company, Include Fitness to be the vessel to bring this to market.

Currently, the People's Choice Award is up for grabs. In fact, The Access is currently number 2 in the world! I am reaching out to all of you to help support the initiative and help increase the chances of this product reaching the market. If you are willing, I ask for you to quickly vote (takes 30 seconds) and help spread the word.

The grand prize for this competition is around $15,000 USD for the designer and an additional $15,000 USD for the school the designer attended. If you have a couple minutes, it would be deeply appreciated if you could vote for The Access. Public support has been and continues to be the lifeline of this project. A chance to win this competition will vastly help with the progression to bring this product to market as well as provide an opportunity to give back to my alma mater.

Looks Impressive.. and Unaffordable.

Mr. Ryan Eder,

Very interesting design, it looks like even a C5 level quadriplegic, as I am, could use your exercise machine.

I am curious why you fail to show any quadriplegics that require use of a electric/motorized/power wheelchair or scooter; or even those with arthritis, amputees, those of advanced age, etc. in your video...most could benefit greatly from the weight/resistance training your product provides.

Perhaps this is just an oversight on your part not to include those with motorized mobility issues in you publicity materials. If so, you might think about updating your product literature/videos/demos, etc. And furthermore, this lack of inclusion makes me pause, and wonder, if your design took into account the bulkiness of motorized mobility equipment and/or the challenges many of us face.

I hesitate to think that your design did not take this sector of the disabled community into consideration and do acknowledge that your design seems very accessible. My hopes are, that my mentioning of this issue, lack of this particular visual aide, will enlighten and in the end, allow you to not only win the design award you mentioned but also develop the necessary support for your company to provide your design to as many people as possible.

Regards,
