Ive noticed lately that i cant smell like i use to. But it seems that while im urinating the smell and taste comes back very strong until im finished. Has anyone else experienced this. I went to the ear nose and throat doc, he ran cat scans but didnt find anything

its true, i dont understand it, i noticed it when we had a family bar-b-q, everyone was saying how good it smelled. I didnt smell anything, it wasant until i started peeing that i smelled it, after i finish the bar-bque smell was gone

Okay, I am confused............what smelled good? The BBQ or the pee? HELP!!

The BBQ smelled good, I think. Except he's saying he didn't smell it. Dude, that's pretty weird. I don't know. It's probably not connected to your SCI. It could be an issue with your sinuses or something and the pee thing is just a coincidence. Beats me.

I know myself often during BP I can’t smell anything but that’s normally due to having a peg on my nose

Since I use either IC or a sheath,,,, I'm not sure how I'd tell. When I'm using the sheath, I have no idea of when the event is occuring. When I'm using IC, I usually try to do it in private, so my sources of odors is limited,, and as for taste,, well let's just say I don't eat twinkies one handed.

How and where did you first notice this,,,, effect? That might give some clue to the reasons. How about you POW76? Where were you, in relation to the BBQ in question?

Come on EDOG,,, there's a mystery afoot!!! A little help here. Can't you think of any scenarios where holding Mr. Big, might make you smell better?,,, Or taste better? Surely you must have some ideas.

pee came up your throat?

i noticed it the day of the bar-b-que, im sure it was happening before then but that was the day it really made since to me. Its like while im peeing i can taste and smell everything 10times better. its like while peeing my taste n smell is heightned ...when i was by the bar-b-que pit, i didnt notice any smell until i started peeing..i know its strange but its the truth

I am going to add another history......SCI, a year ago, T12 incomplete, since that I can´t small absolutely nothing. Always be focus in the legs, me and my Doctors have not put attention in this situation. Even more when I have a head injury to which they make him responsible for the anosmia.

hmmm, i can actually relate somewhat to this enhanced senses thing as connected to errr.... pissing...i've had an acute sensory perception for most of my life [all of them - smell, taste, touch, and to a slightly lesser degree, hearing and sight] but lost most of my taste/smell sensory due to some bad, hard habits i've had several years back...however, both still become more acute whenever i'm going through a dysreflexia; and a d/r which is usually brought on by an urgent need to cath myself [btw, if i wait until i get that d/r it means i've waited too long and it results in great difficulties in performing the ic, some serious urine spurting out, and a major wet stain hehe]...also i get goose bumbs while this happens and become quite pale...also, somewhat curiously, my eyes, normally bloodshot permanently from ditropan/baclofen use, also suddenly get perfectly clear when that happens....and the bleeding penis becomes little more than a shrunken appendage/piece of skin hahaha...some who have known me for several years can now actually tell when i need to urgently cath myself just by noticing my suddenly clear eyes, paleness and the goosebumps...more to the point however, i've indeed noticed that enhanced sense of smell/taste from the very beginning when i'd get the pre-cath disreflexia...i've wondered about this a few times in the past myself and i came up with an explanation that's based purely on some unscientific logic... i think your case of enhanced sensory [smell] perception while doing the #1 might be related to the same, as when a dysreflexia [mild or severe] occurs, it confuses the brain into false action and often it exhibits the same symptoms as those that a 'normal' person goes through when under severe sudden stress, suich as fear, adrenaline shot to the system, etc...we humans have this code of responses embedded within our systems which date back millennias to our existence as little more than animals and imho that's what's happening to you...every time you go [i don't know whether you're on a legbag, ic program, or something else but usually every time one of us pisses it brings on at least a mildest form of a dysreflexia] the imperceptible d/r which occurs, shoots a dose of adrenaline through your system, ergo - your sensory perception gets momentarily enhanced...at least that's my unofficial theory hehe...

It certainly seems as though the senses are not "fixed", but vary depending on a variety if factors.

Nothing to do with SCI or pissing, but my missus has a very enhanced sense of smell when she gets a migraine. Normally she is barely aware of it when the dogs fart, and they could fart for England!

I guess the answer is simply "Yes". Urinating can be connected to smell if your urethra gets tangled up in the 'ole factory or if you're a dicknose like me.

Could maybe be related to synesthesia? I have an acquaintance who swears that certain words have a smell, and I have always perceived that certain sounds have a color.

Perhaps the act of releasing the bladder triggers something else in the brain. Heck, for all I know those two areas of the cortex are right next to each other. Sounds like an interesting - albeit gross - doctoral thesis.
