Ricky is a 17 year old T6 complete. he is 1 year post injury. Already back to riding his dirt bike, racing a quad and driving his go kart.

Is that ricky posting? - While the quad bike shots look like a para riding it's difficult to believe that the dirtbike is a complete para. It doesn't look like his legs are secured. Is it really a post accident picture? If so I'm very impressed

Russ, it is Ricky's dad Rick posting and yes the Bike shot is 11 months post injury. the picture was taken on Feburary 18th of this year. Let me email a shot of the bike and show you the set up. Auto Clutch, left hand rear brake, foot pans with small stap of Velcro and a go kart seat cut down and mounted to the stock seat base with 2 velcro straps over the lap to hold his legs and keep him secure to the bike.
The nurf bars are to protect his legs in a tip over and the straps are designed to come loose in a crash to allow him to come off the bike. That part hasn't been tested thankfully.

we are working on that. the bike is still a work in progress prototype. Right now we have to catch him. we are working on an air or hydralic operated down rigger type of landing gear, where Ricky can push a button on the handle bars and depoly the landing gear.

I applaud you BOTH. You as a father for giving your son the chances to still ride and have fun. And of course to your son for trying so hard. I want to say thank you to you both. The pics that you posted here help convince Robert that he could ride a four wheeler again. So nearly eight years post injury he is back doing one more of the things that he thought were gone forever. Let your son know that he is truely an inspiration. Thank You Both

I love seeing stuff like this cause it puts reinforcement into what I keep telling my wife. She doesn't want me to do anything that could be dangerous. She thinks I am some fragile piece of crystal or something. While I was still in the hospital, I was telling people that I wanted to race shifter karts. And this past weekend, I rode a 4wd 4 wheeler. It was a blast.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the pictures of my son Ricky. It is amazing to see the smile on his face again after he gets off the bike. We are working on getting him into a Drakart though, something with a roll cage and a seat belt.
I'm glad you guys are able to get back out on the Quads, just be careful.

Ricky does have a go cart, it's not a shifter. It's a 125cc rotax centrifugal clutch(automatic) but it does about 90mph and with your butt 1" off the ground it feels like 200mph.

Best of luck to you both and hopfully the research that is being done will allow all of you to do any sport you want in the future.

I organised an int'l karting race in 2002 - all with hand controls. It was excellent and we had all sorts of guys - ex-motocross, ex-superbike, ex-Army, ex-rally driver, etc, etc. A proper collection of speed-freaks that had injured themselves in their sports. The guy to talk to about karting is a paraplegic Dutch guy called Hans van Schaijck [hans.van.schaijck@home.nl] and this is his line of business - adapting karts to suit the individual.

Hey Dave and Ian,this is Ricky's dad Rick. Mayb you guys can help me, Ricky doesn't have to much desire to do shifter cart, he says it's to violent on his ribs. Rotax is enough but I want to get him using a steering wheel rather than moto style handle bars. any suggestions on how to rig up the throttle and brake on a cart steering wheel?

Dave, are you a Quad? are these the controls you are using? Ricky has many young friends that are Quads with not to good hand function but they really want to drive carts, any ideas?

If you want to buy a set of those hand controls email Hans van Schaijck [hans.van.schaijck@home.nl]. Hans is a para and does this for a living. He's based in Holland. Did you notice the leg supports with velcro strapping?

I'm a quad and can use these controls, but only just. The steering on karts is heavy, so I can use the accelorator and steer OK, but applying the brakes is tricky! Had a few laughs trying out the karts!!!

For quads, Hans has some ideas and designs. Email him and see what he says, as he's the expert. However, I'd imagine that us quads would be able to use your son's handle-bar set up much easier than a steering wheel.

Cheers Ricky, After many years thinking i was stuck on 4 wheels i went out and bought my self a YZ125 last night

I've had a few rides and my friends 125 so i know i can do it, just a matter of doing some mods to the bike and getting my confidence back.

Rooost, this is Rick sr. (ricky's computor is down right now) That's awesome your getting back on 2 wheels!!! It will be quite a challenge on a 2 stoke and even more so on a 125 having to keep the revs up but were really happy for you. best of luck, let me know how it goes and if you have any questions on setting up the bike just give me a shout.

This thing is getting big, I think there are probably about 15 SCI people around the world back riding dirt bikes since Ricky started riding his again.

Cheers Rick, I've actually sent you an email... I would like some closer pics of the seat from different angles to give to the upholsterer to make sure he gets it right. Might be a good idea to post em up on here to give everyone a look.

I would have preferred a 250F but unfortunately with all my expensive hobbies a 125 was all i could afford. My friends 125 has been quite good to ride so hopefully i shouldn't have too many problems.

Also if you have any new footage of Ricky please do post it up, watching his videos really gives me drive to do this.

I would love to post a recent DVD that was done about Ricky and his riding, you guys would be blown away. I just don't know how to do it and it's about 12 minutes long.
Any Ideas?

You can go to http://video.google.com and upload the video there. That is how I get my videos online. It's free too. If it is done in DVD format you will need to rip the DVD to your harddrive into a PC format like WMV, MOV, of AVI before Google video will allow you to upload it.
