Had cath in for a month and last 10 days have been hell.
progressed from a little stinging in bladder to full, all on hell. Been passing large clots and alot of brownish urine that stinks. on second lot of antiboitics nitrfurantoin 50mg 4 x a day. cleariing up urine, but still getting some clots, Also at night i bypass the catheter a little, enough to make undies damp and mark the sheet, its as if the tube gets blocked.
have got a flop flow fitted but have gone back to leg bag. although can't tell if bladdr full or empty, and can not open it, It burns like hell every 2 or 3 mins whn urine passes into it from kidneys, hence why bag back on so it flows out again immediatly.
Any Ideas...........
Drinking 1 ltr of cranberry juice a 2 ltr of water a day, plus ocasioal coffee or tea.....
thanks

Hi Allister, have you ever had damage to your urethra? Last time I had a cath in I had problems with bleeding and cathether blocking. Sounds like a UTI and the fact you are having Nitrofurantoin means you obviously have something there. Is there a possibility that the catheter diameter is too small or that the quantity of blood clots could be blocking your catheter at night, filling your bladder and causing leakage. I think as you have a catheter you could try to drink at night as well by spreading your fluid intake throughout the day and night which will help keep things flushed. How big are the clots? You may also like to try parsley tea. I use 2 litres of water and boil it. Drop in about 20 grams of fresh parsley once the water is boiling and turn off the pan, letting it steep for 15 minutes. Drink this over 2 hours, around 250 mls (or a glass) every 15 minutes. I find it helps me with infection and grow my own parsley. If your cranberry contains sugar stop taking it and switch to plain water or green tea. Sugar can help cause bladder infections and generally cranberry only seems to work on E. coli. I'd also think about dropping the coffee as well. Hope this helps.

I would have yourself checked for a UTI, last time I had clots were due to an infection.
Good luck with it.

My last experience with blood in my urine is the one that led to them finding a cancerous growth in by bladder. The Uro scoped me and found it,, later ( about a week) took it out. It was small and apparrantly of a type less aggressive, so I needed no further treatments,, but did have to go back for scoping every six months for a while,, in fact the next is coming up next month.
I have no sensation, so the whole thing about pain or burning doesn't apply to me,, the same goes for the scoping. I would still,, if I were you,,, have it checked as soon as possible,, as cancer can't wait. Not trying to scare you,, it's just what happened in my case, and I am glad I didn't wait.

No, still got problems
Whilst urine cleared, and only got 1 small clot yesterday, 17th, Its been impossible for me to use my chair. Spent all day on the bed.
As soon as I sit upright, even to eat in bed I get an unberable "wave" of pain from bladder. I don't know if it goes into a spasm, but it starts like a little burning sensation that just builds uo intensifies till I got tears running down my face, then slowly subsides.
If I remain upright in seated position this "wave" repeats after a few minutes and so on.
When I lay bck down it stops, and doesn't happen at all.
ANY IDEAS ? ? ? ? ?
Cath was replaced yesterday and drains well into leg bag.
Its rediculous, was sheer hell to do BP.

I am just wondering how your weight is? Are you a normal weight because this could perhaps change things. Also, do you tie or tape your catheter to your leg? If you sit up this could pull on the catheter which could cause the irritation, especially as the pain starts when you move and gradually subsides. Catheters do move and the urethra changes lenght and shape slightly as well so this irritation, although slight, could be enough to cause pain where the catheter was irritated before.
Try sitting up with no pants on, your clothes could perhaps be tugging on the tube also. Also, have you been checked for bladder stones. Perhaps the pain you are currently experiencing could have been from the previous catheter irritation and trauma. Did they flush your bladder to make sure all fragments of the catheter were flushed out of the bladder.
Don't let these suggestions worry you, I am just clutching at straws because this has pretty well got me stumped other than the suggestions above.

Can you maybe try other methods rather than using an indwelling catheter for a short time? Then you may see if the problem improves, worsens or stays the same which at least may identify a contributing factor.

Hi allister,
What type of catheter are you using? Try changing to 100% Silicone Foley for a while this may help.
Have you been tested for latex allergy, (just a suggestion)

I'm guessing duct tape isn't the answer you wanted?

Hi allister,
What size cath are you using?
Try going down one size or up a size, a cath to small or to large can cause bypassing.
It can also be a slight blockage, use a flush & see if that helps.
It could also be the bladder neck is inflamed from the UTI, try less water in balloon to help it sit correctly.

Hi allister,
It's worth trying what Cr suggested about using less water in the balloon. I had problems with leaking but found that with just 8.5ml in a 10 ml balloon it's almost stopped. I still leak a little first thing in the morning with all the movement during bathing, dressing etc but usually stay dry throughout the day. Glad the pain's gone!

Thanks trinity, I've been tried without a cath, but I can not open bladder, and the thought of IC scares me at the moment, so I'm a bit stuck for options on that score..

Thanks for comments, appreciated.
Have now been told about washes and having daily at moment. They are also playing with balloon. But less water in it has ment some daytime leakage last two days too. Presume next option is to replace cath again and alter size..Currently it's a 14, so i might need next size up? Really not looking forward to upsetting things there again.

You must have hollow legs!!!.....5 litres a day? I am really struggling to get 2.5 ltrs drunk throughout the day, plus 75ml overnight. Heavenforbid they want more!! I'd be leaking from other places with that amount, like one of those warner bro's cartoons who's just been shot !!!!

Hi guys
Well its now a day away from 2010 and I am still having big issues with the urethral indwelling cath. Wicked spasms, bypassing, clotting,. Must say I haven't had a uti for the past 2mths though !
Urologist has recomended that I have a Suprapubic. Tried IC but bladder just spasms and unable to pass cath through.
Concerned that I have some feeling in abdomen, although reduced, and is this going to hurt like hell when in-situ ?
Urologist is having me in overnight incase of spasms, but I've been given different advice as to how they are changed. My inco nurse said she'll come to the home and do it, Urologist says, Its a day case in hospital every 4 weeks to change it ?
What is it ? ? ?
ALso been told that if this doesn't stop the bladder spasms, he will inject botox into the bladder. If that fails to stop them, then its a major op involving using part of the bowel to form a permanent route from bladder through abdomen to IC through. O U C H >>
Anyone else had these issues?
Currently take both Tolteradine and Buscopan for the spasms.
Thanks
Al

Allister,
Sorry you've gone through so much with your bladder problems. It's the MOST frustrating thing to have to deal with until it gets nailed down!!
I recommend trying All bladder spasm meds until you get one that might possibly do the trick BEFORE going into any surgical answers. I tried Detrol LA, and another one before settling with Oxybutynin.
I know they don't all work for everyone, but before going under the knife, I'd recommend exhausting all other options first.
