In the past 3 or 4 days my husband has been having 1 or 2 accidents a day. We do his program every night but it seems as soon as I get him up and dressed and in the chair in the morning it happens. I'm wondering if I need to change his program around, I don't know what to do.

He could have an infection, or be allergic to dairy. My brother developed lactose intolerance after his accident and several times, when he has has repeated accidents, it's turned out to be an intestinal infection. Another reason could be that his bowels aren't completely eliminating, in which case you could spend a little more time on the bowel program or do it more often. My 1st option would be to go to the doctor and get him tested for an infection.

Oh! Try fiber, too. To bulk up his stool.

Think about what he has ate in the past few days--could be that.....eat some salad he needs some bulking fiber to help his body hang onto it.....but I wouldn't recommend changing the program ---changing that at this point would only cause more problems. The above is true, that happened alot to us at first as I wasn't spending enough time, plus once you are home, he is now eating different foods and not the lovely hospital diet of champions. Also try once you think that he is "done" have him push on his stomach from right to left across his belly button (there is a name for this, I think it's Valsolvo or something like it--this follows the decending colon structure and helps to push anything else down and out) wait a couple of minutes and do dig stim to encourage anything else down..... The first 6 months or so is the hardest and unfortunately the "group poop" as Duke calls it takes time to get your body into the habit. Hope this helps!

Thank you, I'll try what you said. Getting him to eat better is another story, it's easier to get our 5 year old to eat right.

Ahhh yes. I remember that too. And to be honest with you the pee is way worse than the poop. Do you know the old prank where if you put a sleeping persons hand in hot water they pee themselves? The shower thing is like that for some reason. Sometimes I would get out of the shower and pee myself.. So I started cathing before going into the shower. Also the poop thing and toilets was getting messy too. So I started going poop in the shower. Cleaning myself off after so I was clean when I finished. bowel as an sci is hard enough. Doing it on a toilet can be even harder. I would recommend doing it in the shower. Yes it might be nastier and messier. But in the end less things get dirty, and it is way faster and more effective. less smelly too afterwards. I remember trying to clean myself after using a toilet in the begining. wiping myself down I would get it all over my clothes and my hands. Having to wash them off in the very toilet I was using after I flushed. I found it much cleaner doing it in the shower. Cleaning off, and dressing into clean clothes after. Not to mention safer. I feel less pressured to hurry up and get things done when im in the shower. When on the toilet I feel like im being timed. People are waiting, or even watching. The toilet might be something he can do in the future. But he should do whats cleanest, easiest, and less stressfull. Also those pill things became stressfull too. Ive learned now that going in with my hand and getting it out takes less time and is better for me knowing I dont need to stick something foreign up my butt to get poop out. I go in with my finger dig it out and thats it. I rememeber in the beginning sticking that pill thing in and waiting forever. sometimes it wouldnt even work. I said you know what. screw this. ill get it out myself. It takes some practice though. Doing circles around the inside with the finger causes the stuff to move "forward" or "down" sometimes it is too much to get out right away though. That is when I start to just dig it out like I would if I was getting peanut butter out without a spoon. This stuff is all so nasty but im 3 years post and have gotten use to it. Nobody knows this except me. And im telling you to make things easier hopefully. If he needs any help getting function back he can ask me. I know a little bit about that too. I havnt 1 single day of physical therapy and have gotten some stuff to work again.
