Well we finally got it!! it's a NASCAR style West Coast Pro Truck, 250 hp, automatic trans, 2700lb purpose built race truck. He's going to compete on 1/2 mile and 1/4 mile oval tracks.
We went out friday night to our local track which is Irwindale Raceway, it was Ricky's first time behind the wheel since we just got the hand controls installed the day before. After 20 laps of practice he was running a 1/2 second off the pace of the top 5 trucks, not bad for the first time.
we have a lot to learn comming from a dirt bike motocross back ground, this 4 wheel pavement deal is all new to us.

Can You get pics of the controls? How does he shift it, or is it a automatic? I wanna put together a dirt race car within a year or too, I think that it would be much harder than running on asphalt. You know what they say..Dirt is for racing, and asphalt is just for getting there. Haha .gif)

Ricky is using an everyday type handcontrol made by monarch. There are more high tech ones out there it's just that they cost BIG $$$'s. we want to make sure it's a sport he wants to stay with before we spend that kind of cash and the other thing that in a "panic" situation we thought it best to start with something that is second nature to him.
We wanted to do the dirt thing also since Ricky has grown up racing off road motorcycles and motocross. We looked at Off Road CORR seiries trucks and they are about 5 times as expensive as the asphalt oval racing deal. We hope that with some good results in this class he can attract some attention and get some sponsorship to get into off road in the future.
By the way the truck is an automatic. If you go to www.pararallying.com they have some links on there site to hand controls for stick shifts. Also www.rediautosport.com has some also.

Hey thanks for the links and the info. I was just thinking about building my own control setup, maybe kinda like what evan evans runs in his off-road truck, but of course low budget..haha

Do you have any more info from that www.pararallying.com site? It doesn't look like the site is up anymore. From the talks of it, I might be getting into a dirt modified this year. Prolly won't race every weekend, as we're just throwing a bunch of spare parts together and hope that they'll work..lol
