These are some close up pics of my completed paraplegic YZ

First we have the left side view where you can see the kliktronic and how it mounts.

Now a close up, i milled out a small section of the magneto cover to accommodate the mounting plate for the shifter.

The foot holder. Ive tried to make the bottom of the bar work as narrow as possible to avoid it digging into the ground when i lean it over.

The bar work connecting at the bottom, this is important as it adds a lot of strength. My first attempt at the bar work attached to the frame and got bent up very easily with a few stacks. The bolts joining the two ends of the allow the frame to be removed from the bike as it is a single piece.

Here you can see the top mount for the frame. It also connects to the other side via a strong U piece as you can see. Once again this adds the required strength. If you are modifying a newer bike with alloy perimeter frame i recommend using a top mount section as on Rickys bike just at the top of the fuel tank as it will be much easier. Unfortunately on the 03YZ this was my only option.

Side view with the modified seat. All i did was cut the bottom off a go kart seat, take off the bike seat cover and cut a section out of the foam to slot in the cut go kart seat. Drill some holes and put it all together. I thn took the whole thing to an upholsterer to have it covered and padded. There is a small cussion not shown here that protects my ass from the bolt heads. Also the straps are a bit of a worry but if you want to ride properly and be able to do jumps you need to strap your self on.

Here you can see the added strengthening to stop the bars bending back, again joining one side to the other for strength. Most of your stacks will want to push the bar work backwards so this is important.

Ok... next post on to the Electrics

This is the small sealed Gel Cell battery to run the gear shifter. This is a standard Battery that can be bought at any bike shop, its small enough to fit in the air box and provides just enough power to run the shifter.

Here you can see i've simply fastened a piece of flat bar with cable ties for mounting the battery, the flat bar gets squashed down by the seat and keeps the battery in place.

This is the airbox with the kilktronic controller box mounted and battery removed.

Now with the Battery installed.

As the MX bike has no electrical system i have bought a replacement stator with lighting coil. These are usually used to provide the bike with power for running a light. I ran the lighting output from the coil through a single phase regulator which charges the battery.

Here you can see the small on off switch mounted into the air box to turn the whole system off. Make sure the On position is towards the bottom to prevent a hard landing turning the switch off ;)

Rear Brake

Here you can see the rear brake, ive rigged up a master cylinder from a 2004 KX250 just under the clutch. you can also see the shifter buttons for up and down shift via the thumb. This makes for a very busy left hand but you get used to it pretty quick.

As you can see with a bit of practice its possible to pull the clutch and still operate the rear brake for rear wheel sliding joy.

Here you can see the routing of the rear brake line. I used a front brake line from an earlier model RM250, this line turned out to be the perfect length to reach the rear slave cylinder.

Also notice the Bark busters. If your going ride two wheels as a para these are a must as you hands will get smashed otherwise. If your going to tip keep your hands on the bars to prevent breaking your arm and the bark busters will do the rest. Its also very handy when stopping up against a tree.

No get out there and build a bike smile.gif

Hey Marcel,
How's it going?
Looks like that bike is getting some use, that's great. Your clutch/ brake set up looks pretty tricky to operate, you should get a hold of Patrick at www.rekluse.com and get him to set you up with one of there clutches, they work great and you can get rid of your clutch lever all together, it won't stall very easy either.

keep it up....

Hi Rick,

Going well, i've been out of action with a broken rib for that last 7 weeks but other than that im on the bike nearly every weekend, cant wait to get back into it next weekend as the ribs just about healed up.

How is Ricky going with his shoulder?

Yeah, the rekluse would be great though on the 125 i need to stab the clutch a lot especially in the dunes where the poor 125 is robbed of power. I can imagine these would be great on a 4 stroke though.
atvaholic
sweet set up..j/w are you having any issues with your shifter? i have a oingel one designed for drag racing and if i do full throttle shifts it craps out and i have to restart the shifter again...any tips?
rjames
Hey Marcel, sorry to hear about your ribs, glad they are healing up though. Do you wear any king of ab binder or corsett when you ride? Ricky does and it gives his mid section extra support from the pounding.

His shoulder is good, surgery last august, almos 2 months in bed (pretty rough) but he back out training since about early november. he's training for the Ironman triathalon that will be held in Hawaii this november. It's going to be gnarley, about 12 to 13 hours long.

we are currently building a new bike, 2008 KTM 450 electric start, should be done in a few weeks, i'll post some pictures when it's done.

Atvaholic,
what's up? we use a kliktronic just like marcels with out the ignition cut out for speed shifting so we have not experienced the problem you are having so i don't have much to comment on. Maybe disconnect that feature?

have fun tearing it up you guys,
Rick

thats what we did at 1st but the wires would get too hot and crap out...i wish i knew aboutt he klic tronic 1st haha o well i am makin a jockey shifter for back up and adding snowboard bindings to the foot pegs. i am actully doina wpsa national in illinois in may. i belive i'll be the 1st canadian paraplegic to race motocross....still having an issue with the cmrc about racing mx in canada but then again i am the 1st para to try, so i understand i am goin to have to do soem advocating...

back to your thread marcel hows your jumping comming along?
Andrew Meddings
hi marcel good on you for going to so much trouble
see ya when im looking at ya
Roooost
Rick,

Im not wearing a Corsett but that sounds like a great idea. Can you give me a product name of the one Ricky is using? I wear a kidney belt but they dont give much support.

Damn 2 months in bed, thats gotta suck. Good to hear hes is on the mend, look forward to seeing that KTM. Very interested to hear how Ricky copes with the extra weight and power.

ATVaholic,

Jumping on the YZ is great... I've started to build a down ramp out the back of my place and hoping to hit a ramp for the first time some time this year. Theres some pics here http://www.apparelyzed.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5471 of me clearing a nice jump out in the dunes. Defiantly wouldn't try this on the Raptor though.
Roooost
Rick,

On another point i believe you had some problems with the gearbox on the CRF? What was the problem there? Was it top gear too?

I just lost 5th gear on my Raptor, it keeps skipping out of gear so im guessing a bent selector fork. Im starting to think the kliktronic might be wrecking 5th when im already in 5th and go to grab another gear not realizing im in 5th already.
Mallee
Nice setup. Great thinking = great times
