Hello everyone! My fiance is c5-c6. He LOVED to play golf before his injury, which was about 2 years ago. I was just curious if any of you have tried to play golf. And wondering what type of equipment you used, etc. Also, was it difficult...compared to other wheelchair sports?

He hasn't tried it yet...I think he is kinda nervous, because he used to be sooo good before. I might actually beat him now! biggrin.gif

I know that some Tetras use one of those straps (name escapes me) which pens etc can be put into - which velcros/fastens around the hand. I read somewhere of a Tetra who had one of those and placed his clubs into it..not sure if he secured them or whether he hoped they wouldn't fly out!! LOL I will have a look for where I saw it and post it if I find it...

Take care,

I missed it terribly and even went to far as to buy the kind of cart that Motor is talking about.

Went to the driving range and found I could hit it about 180 (best shot, with roll) and fairly straight, so I found an organization putting on a tournament for disabled golfers.

Practiced hard, went to the course, found that the diabled were mostly amputees of one sort or another.

Being a single, I was placed on a team (scramble format) with a stroke victim and a guy with the gout. Don't get me wrong,, we had a blast, and did well (even from the reds),, I thought,, until we got in and found the two winning teams tied at 13 under.

I quess what I'm saying is,,, if your guy was as competitive as me,,, he won't be happy with what he is physically capable of today. Particularly if he was a low handicapper before.

I've no idea of what he can do, so I'll tell you what I did and you can take it from there. I have complete use of my arms, but no use of my abs. Had to swing one handed and use the other arm to pull my body out of the way of my swing. It worked ok and since my lower body didn't move, I tended to stay over the ball better (no slice or hook). I even found it easier to move the ball, just couldn't hit it as far. Putting wasn't bad, chipping wasn't hard to get used to either. I would probably still be trying if the pain hadn't gotten to me.

You can get more info from the USGA and the LPGA, both of whom have programs set up for disabled golfers. Try googling golf, disabled,,, that's how I started.

I wish you both luck and low scores.

As for me, I've decided to get some Knobby tires and turn my cart into a hunting buggy. I miss squirrel hunting, too.

Best of luck to your fiance in learning to play golf again.

I've tried it a couple times post injury (i was scratch player before) and it just wasn't the same for me. It's a whole new game.

But what I loved is going back onto the field...the smells..the sights... I'm sure your boyfriend would love that too.

Hello, I am a paraplegic that golfs. I actually compete in an "able-bodied" men's club so I'd be glad to help your husband get back on the golf course. I've posted a few short videos on my You Tube account which is Sitglfrsam. Check them out...; )

Could you use some sort of air canon?

Don't know if will have same sort of thrill as hitting the ball, but it might get you on the coarses again.

Don't know about putting though.

i was in the same boat, my dad & i go to the course 5-6days a week still, we've taken some old clubs of mine & cut them down to shorter length & use an ace bandage to secure it to my right form arm/wrist then i can just swing lean over the side & swing, i'm no where near a competitive level but it feels good to get out & swing the club. i just stick to shots around the green cause i just can't get the distance anymore, my farthest has been maybe 40 yards or so, i also don't wanna put my chair on the green so i don't putt either right now, but it does feel nice to be back out there & hitting some shots

What's one of those carts worth and is there much to them?

I went to the driving range with my mates for the first time sine my injury. I was crap before my accident but it's still good fun to play. I tried it from my chair swinging with one hand. I just about managed to hit the ball but it went about 30 yards laugh.gif

Would love one of those carts but I've hard they cost about £10k

I'm a C 5-6 and also loved playing golf before my football injury. Anyway, I still go and putt. We have a little 9 hole course where I live and they let me get on the greens. Not a great course but it's still a lot of fun. I just line it up, lean over the side of my chair, and putt. Actually I'm a better putter now than I was before my injury. Hope this helps.
