Has anyone had problems with high levels of calcium in the blood (serum calcium) after SCI? About 4 1/2 to 5 months after injury my sons calcium levels shot up, and they flushed it out with lasix and lots of IV fluids. Then they gave him Fosamax to make the body lay calcium back down in the bones. It worked for almost 3 months, and now it has started up again. His serum calcium level is again high. He is seeing an Endocrinologist, who is stumped. I think the Fosamax will correct the problem, b ut does anyone know what causes it? It has been suggested that it might be due to lack of weight bearing (he is C3 complete) but apparently there is no clinical study on this. All the bone loss studies seem to be on post menopausal women, not 21 year old men.
