hi, i was just wondering if anyone has, or is suffering the same as my partner.
He had a presure sore in 1999, took two years to heal, but must have left a sinus in his hip. Three years ago it broke down again, and the gunk that came out of it was unbeliveable, if we bent his leg up the stuff just came out with such a force.and was realy thick (sorry if it's too graphic).
It eventually healed up, but took a lot of time ,and care ,we were packing it every night.
Well for the last couple of months,, he's had a swelling on his hip, that has got gradually bigger and it's hot,he's suffering very bad sweats in bed, and,he's got a lot of pain and crunching in his lower back.
His knee looks out of place,(he's had xrays but the hospital say's theres nothing wrong) at the moment we'r waiting for a referal to the specialist at the hospital.

any ideas?

thank's maria.

Did they check for an infection? That sounds like a boil, just guessing.

Sorry i forgot to say, the lump is hard and he's had four courses of strong antibiotics.

They need to do a culture to make sure that he is getting the right antibiotic.

Hello,
Just a few thoughts from me (lol sorry). Have the drs looked into Heterotopic Ossification? Heterotopic ossification is a condition consists of the laying down of bone outside the normal skeleton, usually occurring at large joints such as the hips or knees. It is not very well understood either, so can be missed. There is a risk for joint stiffening and fusion in the latter stages, but early on, the signs are usually Spasticity and increased tone in the leg/joint The sinus a few years back could have been a red herring...t takes between 12 and 18 months for heterotopic bone to mature once it has developed, so it may have been 'missed' on MRI if in an interim stage...if he had mri etc..

Also, has he had tests for Rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory such as septic arthritis?? That presents very similar to what you describe here...

Both (and of course other issues) can cause AD...

Please see Here for some HO info and here and here for Septic arthritis info

those are a few other things to investigate as well as the sinus...

I hope that you get to the root of the issue and sort it soon!

I hope this is of some use,

Take care,

K

Thank's K, i'v looked at the sites and it does sound like the HO. At least when we get the appointment we could refer to it, we didn't know which way to turn as all they were doing was giving antibiotics all the time, and it seems to be getting worse not better

thanks again for you'r time

Sounds like a biopsy would help in determining what the growth consists of. Good luck at the specialists.

By the way . . . I have HO in my left front hip joint. It doesn't bother me, but they do need to keep in mind it's there in case the growth spurs other problems down the line.

Sounds about what happened to my right hip........ It turned out to be Osteomyelitis........ After about 9 surguries, I ended up losing my right leg, because it got into my pelvis.......

Nasty, we were told that it could be that when it first started ( around three years ago) but after having xrays at the time it was decided that it wasn't. We didnt think that it could be that now as time has gone on... we'r just crossing our fingers and hoping that it's not,as his sweats and spasms are realy bad now.

Hi again, Jim if you don't mind me asking now long were you ill for?

We have just got back from the hospital and shaun has to go into hospital on monday to have his hip cut open and washed out,

following the results of an MRI scan we have been told that he has osteomyelitis.

He's realy nervous, they will be cutting the one side and his other side is not good to sleep on as its breaking down,

he cant sleep on his stomach as he will be putting pressure on his knees (he has just recovered from a bout of osteomylitis there) and he cant sleep on his back .

How did you manage?

How long were you in hospital for?

thank's maria.
