Hi everyone,

I'm a journalist based in Phuket, Thailand. I'm writing an article about accessibility in Phuket and would be really interested to hear from any wheelchair users who have spent some time here.

In particular, I'd like to know:

What is your type of impairment?
When were you here and for how long?
Where did you stay?
What was the place you stayed in like in terms of accessibility? How much of the hotel was wheelchair accessible?
How were you treated by the staff in the hotel?
What is your impression of the Thai attitude to disability?
What places did you visit during your stay here?
How did you get around?
Were there many places you wanted to visit but were unable to due to access problems? If so, where?
Would you come here again?
Would you recommend a holiday here to other wheelchair users?
How does Phuket compare to other places you've visited on holiday in terms of accessibility?
How could Phuket be improved in this respect?
Any other comments you have, or any anecdotes illustrative of your stay here.

And if you're willing, your name, age and where you're from.

Cheers,

Dan

What is your type of impairment? Polio

When were you here and for how long? 2002 - for about 10 days

Where did you stay? I stayed at the YHA backpackers' hostel in Chalong

What was the place you stayed in like in terms of accessibility? Quite good. They had a portable ramp entrance and two lovely girls who helped me in and out.

How much of the hotel was wheelchair accessible? The hostel was like a bungalow, so most of the main floor and backyard BBQ area was OK

How were you treated by the staff in the hotel? Like a King. They couldn't do enough for me...the breakfast area was in a restaurant in front, down a rough road, and they always wanted to help. Also a guy whose sister worked there drove me around everywhere, as first as a taxi, then for free!

What is your impression of the Thai attitude to disability? Seems OK...in Bangkok, a traffic guy got down from his high perch and helped me across the road. The Thais are a gentle, sweet people.

What places did you visit during your stay here? Just Bangkok and Phuket.

How did you get around? Mostly by taxi and plane.

Were there many places you wanted to visit but were unable to due to access problems? Probably temples with their stairs.
If so, where? All over

Would you come here again? Yes, of course, I would like to visit the north next time.

Would you recommend a holiday here to other wheelchair users? Yes I would, it is in my book.

How does Phuket compare to other places you've visited on holiday in terms of accessibility? It is a bit rougher, as you would expect, but the main beach area is quite good and w/c friendly from what I saw and experienced.

How could Phuket be improved in this respect? A modern bus with w/c access, stopping at all the beaches and towns like Chalong, even only running a few times a day would be great!

Any other comments you have, or any anecdotes illustrative of your stay here. Yes, I enjoyed watching the Monks coming round the houses for their daily food from the women...and many more.

And if you're willing, your name, age and where you're from. Walt Balenovich, N. America's Disabled Adventurer, Toronto, Canada

Unfortunately my trial is Vietnam and it works to a lesser degree but the willingness is certainly there. I would be interested in the resonses that you get for a future trip. Is that possible?
