To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Donald Jones and I am an eighteen-year-old quadraplegic with a poor living environment. Four years ago I was in a car accident that left me paralyzed from the neck down. Since then, my mother and I have been homebound. So my hope with this letter is to try to reach someone or anyone willing or able to help in anyway possible.
Since we've been pretty much homebound, we've both been depressed with our living status and lack of abilities. Since I have barely any movement of my own, I am depended on my mother. Just being together constantly makes us fight outrageously, and is becoming very unhealthy for the both of us. I'm also at that age where I need my own space, but it's impossible because of my situation. Even if my mother and I had some kind of exercising tool that we could do together, to relieve overloaded stress, it would help.
I have a computer that I can use with a small, sticker dot that is placed on my forehead. But that is about the only entertainment that I have to do. I live in a trailor which is falling apart, due to the heaviness and size of my chair. Our home is not at all adaptable or suitable for my injuries. We have tried to accomadate as best as we could, but with little-to-no funds, we are still having trouble and struggle tremendously.
My bedroom and bathroom are so small that it is very hard for nurses to help me. I do not have the proper room size for them to move freely. It is also very hard for me to move around in my chair or to have company over. I can't even get into the bathroom with my chair. I have equiptment that is to be used daily to help stretch muscles and strenghten bones and joints so that they don't get stiff and cause further damage. But due to the formation of the small room, it is very difficult to use these as often as I should.
From being in a bed constantly or chair ridden, I have already suffered extremely bad spasms and contraction, along with multiple UTI's. My bones and skin are at high risk of deterioration and skin breakdown. I was given a peice of equipment called a stander. I have only used the stander once in the two years that I have had it due to lack of space and staff. I was also told that I should have a hot tub or a whirlpool to help reduce spasms, help loosen muscles and joints, and for my range of motion movements.
Not only my bedroom, but other parts of our home are falling apart. The kitchen floor is ready to fall in, because of the heaviness of my chair. My mother is repeatedly scrubbing the carpets because of my chair tracking in mud and dirt. We cannot open or close the the front door easily anymore. I've torn the whole door apart over time with the size of my chair. Therefore, the door is also in need of replacement. Trying to get my chair in and out is becomming impossible. We also have plumbing problems. We desperately need financial help to hopefully rebuild or atleast add-on. But we will appreciate anything and be happy with any little help that we can get. Any kind of help would do us so much right now.
We currently are seeking nurse’s aides and/or funding to have assistance with my daily needs. We need reliable, daily aides. We have existed in limbo for the past two years. The wear and tear of lifting, dressing, and bathing me has taken a toll on my mother’s back. Without my mother’s assistance, I could not live life as I am living it now!
Also, we desperately need financial support! We need to rebuild many areas of our home in order to make it safe for me to maneuver around and exist, with at least some dignity! However, funds to do so are not available, since our income is just enough for survival.
My mom and I are desperately in need of help! We are asking for any help that we can get, at this point! We are looking for agencies, groups, individuals, and/or funds to help us live in a safe, dignified manner. We would appreciate any assistance from anyone out there! We could use help with household repairs, materials to make these repairs, manpower to complete accommodations, funds to buy what is needed, or even someone willing to devote the time and effort to provide us with a safe home environment. Anything could help us at this point! We need so much right now, but are asking for whatever and however you can assist us to meet these needs. If you find it impossible to lend a hand, but can lead us to someone out there that might be able to provide any type of assistance at all, please forward this to them. We would be whole heartedly grateful for your support in our efforts!
If there's anything that you could do, please contact my mother or I at (724) 569-5222. We live in Smithfield, Pennsylvania. Also, my email address is n_0_f_e_a_r@hotmail.com. But if there is nothing you are able to do, I still appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to read my letter. And please forward this to anyone that might be able to help in any ways possible!
Thank you so much for your time,
Donald Jones

Aw, c'mon Dog - have a heart for Chrissake. Gotta give the kid one thing - he gave his address. I'm doing the ol' Google earth thing right now. Should be interesting to see if there's a trailer park

Did the Google Earth bit. Can't find the trailer. Looks like there's a nice pool in the back yard. How's the water?
Tell ya' what, kiddo - you gave it the ol' college try. Now, get a job ... maybe a life, too. And if I'm being a total asshole, you have my most sincere apologies.

Not quite sure if this is exactly your trailer, but I don't think it looks like one to me.
If I'm totally wrong about your situation, I'm am so so sorry.
Just a thought if this is legit, you might be able to contact your local Habitat for Humanity and they might be able to help with your living conditions. I consulted with them about a house they were building for a disabled man when I lived in Fresno (made sure they didn't put carpeting throughout the house ...etc...) . He was also house bound living with his elderly mom ... just a thought.

Well, I'll be a sonnuvagun (and an asshole, too, I guess). You got me cold, Don. But you understand how folks can be a little suspicious, not to mention cynical. Sounds like you and your mom are in a helluva fix. Do any churches in your area help with stuff like this? Out here in the Sierra foothills there's an outfit called the Crisis Network. They do some fine work for people in tight spots. Like Fergy said, try the Habitat For Humanity (I used to write grants for them - a dandy outfit.)
Do you know of an sci support group in your area? I facilitate a small one here (www.placervillesci.homestead.com/index.html) and recently managed to hook up a guy with a slick new-used power chair. I know your circumstance is a tad more substantial than a w/c, but try contacting a local support group or rehab ctr. They should be able to turn you on to something.
Good luck and have a good Christmas anyway.

Going on the original registration date, previous postings, and other information I have, to the best of my ability, I feel this post is legitimate.
However, I would always be cautious of sending goods or money based soley on information posted on the internet.
By all means, suggest organisations who can help, and who have the ability to vet people requiring help, so they can establish the authenticity of the request.

You always have to remember, as bad as it is there is ALWAYS someone with it worse.. find out your resources.. put them all together, and make the best out of what you have, dont worry about what you dont.
