Hi I'm writing on behalf of my 22 year old nephew, He was in an automobile accident on August 7, 2008 and was in the hospital for 3 months and Rehab for three weeks, he has been home two weeks as of today and is very depressed and cries daily, He is to start out patient Rehab next week, This is something totally new to our family and has crushed all of us, We try to keep his spirits up and he actually does pretty well considering the fact that he was such an active young man before his accident and now is dependent on everyone for everything right now. We work with him at home with ROM and different exercises and he's willing to do anything we ask, but is limited to alot of things because his left shoulder was crushed in the accident and is limited to some activities he can do with his shoulder injury. He is classified as an Asia A, We're not sure exactly what this means. If someone could explain it to us, we would greatly appreciate it. At this time he has no trunk control at all, is this something that he can overcome with his injury or is this something that could be permanent? I know every injury is different but we have so many unanswered questions, He has a really bad problem with his blood pressure dropping and passing out also? I would appreciate any information anyone could give me on this level of injury and what we can expect in the future. The Doctors have basically told us what you see is what you get but I just don't believe that. I believe in prayers and I know God has answered, He's still here with us.
God Bless All of you

Hi and Welcome!!
My husband got in to his auto accident Sept. 2006 when he was 18 years old. He is c5-c6. He was also VERY active...with sports, his career, etc. I can't offer much advice to your nephews depression... Except make sure that he gets out of the house. And not just for rehab. My husband always says that is what helped him feel better. Even when we were in the hospital we would take a little trip out to dinner or to the mall or something. And we continue to do this. We travel a lot and visit people, etc.
Every SCI is different. But my husband started off as Asia A. And he is now Asia B. Which means he has gotten SOME trunk control back. He can also feel a little bit on his toes. He hasn't regained any movement...but every little thing he has gotten back has been awesome. And the doctors were wrong about my husband. So they can surely be wrong about your nephew.
I also wanted to say that even if your nephew does not make a full recovery... my husband lives an awesome life. And we still have an awesome relationship, we still have a lot of fun together. The first year was the hardest for us...it does get better with time IMO.
If you have any questions just ask!
