Usually happens if I'm doing it from the chair, never a problem on the bed, I suppose you have tried that?
When I get the resistance I'm allways weary being a newbie cather that I'm gonna do some damage, but slowly increasing the pushing in pressure and taking deep relaxing breaths usually makes something give, I hope a more experianced catheteerer answers and you get sorted soon.

Use KY lube or get some Instillagel to help easy the catheter in.
Get yourself checked out for an infection UTI or bladder stones, if you have not.
Be very careful to not let your bladder overfill as you can trigger AD.
I hope you get your problem sorted soon.

If the restriction is before that area, it could very well be an infection of the urethra,,, but if it's at the sphincter or beyond there may be other problems,,, like the stones mentioned above,
Either way,, if it doesn't get easier within a day or so,, a visit to the urologist is in order.
As an after thought,,,, does it become easier to cath immediately after the " urine escape"?

Well, I catheterize with an external catheter every 3-4-5 hours... sometimes I don't catheterize until I feel a 'tingling' which tells me okay, it's about to 'escape' hurry! I know that's probably not good, but I get caught up with school and all.
Also, 'youwhat' it does help sometimes to relax, and lay back in the chair. But sometimes it just gets too strict and hard to get in...
'Pikey', I do use lube, sometimes fill up the god damn catheter! and during those 'stuck' moments nothing will help.
PS. I don't believe I have a UTI... I feel 'wierd' when I have a UTI, my urine gets cloudy, and I'm getting none of those symptoms...
