My partner went to the hospital on tuesday to see the urologist,he had a look at all the plumming bits and told him that he had to do intermitent cathing.
He has been using condom drainage for 23 years, the problem we have now is that we cant get the catheter in, it hits something inside and just wont go any futher.
When we tried last night he started to bleed and it frightened me, he didnt seem to freaked out with this though, same thing happened today though.
So we havent realy had much succsess as yet, are there any tips on getting things to relax as we both getting stressed out which isn't helping the problem.
I have read through all the old posts but any information would be appreiceated i don't want to hurt him.
I read on one of the posts that there could be a false opening in the uretha, but if there was this problem wouldn't the urologist have found it when he had the camera on tuesday?
thank's maria

Seems to be a common problem from my brief experience, the first week I was out I had the problem constantly but the only thing I can suggest is try lying flat, relaxing is very important and just be patient with it. It may take a minute or two for it to go in but just leave it a few seconds then gently try again. I would say if there was blood he could have pushed it in a little too hard, just go careful and I'm sure he'll get the hang of it.
If he's doing it in the chair, my way is to shuffle down to the edge of it, this helps alot for me when putting the catheter in. Hope you get it sorted soon!

But have you tried walking?

Accept, firstly, that having a very tight sphincter is a good thing with regard to cathing,, in that it will probably help to reduce incontinence between caths.
If it is snug all the way you may need more lubrication, or a smaller size cath,,,, if it only stops at the sphincter, it may be the a tension thing,,,, there are people who can't 'go" with others in the room ( and these are ABs).
If the Urologist did all the proper tests, he would have used a type of catheter in at least two of the most basic ones. The dynamic test, which shows how much fluid your bladder will hold without leaking, is the one he would need to have done to have told you to start self cathing, so it seems obvious that it is possible.
As was said above,,,, just relax,,,, It will happen.

also make sure u use alot of jell, alot of jell, once the body gets used to it it will make a big difference, patience and tenderness, remember if he could feel it how much pain that would have been, i've known alot of people with false channels...............

Just one more question, is there any medication that he could take to relax the sphincter as we are only managing to cath once maybe twice a day.
He takes baclofen, dantroline, and flomax, are there others that he could ask about at his next visit to the urologist.
He has got cellulitus in his hip at the moment so it may be that causing the spasms, but it's realy getting him down when things don't work.
thank's maria
