I have been prescribed by my doc a hydrocolloid dressing for a small wound that I have on my butt. Only the surface skin has scrapped off and there is very little discharge. That too only when I sit on my wheelchair. There is, thankfully, no discharge when I am on my bed.

I relieve the pressure on my butt by sleeping on my side as much as possible.

I have been asked by my doc to apply a patch of the hydrocolloid dressing and leave it in place for at least 5 days. But I am afraid whether there will be any trauma to the skin when I try to remove it. Otherwise I will end up having a bigger probelm on my hands.

Has anyone here tried hydrocolloid wound dressings? What is your opinion? Is it effective? Does it cause more problems than it solves.

Kindly respond.

Today must be hydrocolloid day, I just responded to another post on the same subject. I have found the hydrocolloids to be much more gentle than the evil tape-and-gauze routine. There are zillions to choose from - Coloplast Comfeel is very good, very thin and gentle on the skin. I didn't like the Duoderm CGF - it never seems to stay where I put it, yet it sticks like crazy when I'm trying to remove it from his bum!

You can order them online and you don't have to order huge quantities - they are frequently sold by the single unit. Try ten different kinds if you need to. I order from St. Andrew's Medical supply (samsupply.com) but there are lots of resources. Also get some of the SkinPrep pads - this creates a thin barrier which also helps protect your skin.

Good luck!

I have had good results with them they don't pull the scab off when you change the dressing. When you change them don't disturb the wound just keep it clean and replace it. Follow the instructions and try to keep it as dry as possible.

@longhaul
Thanks for the instructions. Will surely give it a try.

@Janet
I am from India. None of the brand names that you have mentioned are available here. Except maybe for Duoderm. Online ordering won't work because delivery to India will cost more than the product itself. A brand named HyColoid is available here which is locally manufactured. My plastic surgeon has recommended this to me. Will give it a try soon.
Thanks for your reply all the same.

Sorry, Paraman, I glanced too quickly at your location and read it as "Indiana" not "India." :excl: Hopefully you can find a product that will work for you.
