Hi. I am new here,
I had a tumor removed from my spinal cord c4/c5 in beginging september which has left me with a few problems.
i have reduced sensation in my right side and very reduced mobility in my left although i am able to walk short distnaces with crutches.
I have just got a referal to a spinal unit so am hoping when i go there i may find out more of what to expect.
i feel quite isolated here as i don't know anyone in a similar position,
any advice welcom.

Welcome to the boards, Jane...
It sounds like we share similar mobility abilities, although my injury is in the lumbar. I'm a sprinter too.
Car to door is about all I have in me.
My main injury was in '03, following two cord surgeries. I walked with crutches until sometime early last year. I wasn't attending therapy at that time, so my graduation to a single-point cane wasn't really 'supervised'...but I knew when it was time to challenge myself. I also have a leg brace on my right leg, having no function to speak of on that side...some hip flexion though.
So I'm going on my third year, post-injury, and still am realizing some gains...small ones, but huge ones, if that makes any sense.
Am I understanding that you are now in rehab? You have asked for advice...and I guess the main thing I could pass along is to try and perceive your recovery progress in terms of months or years instead of weeks. Changes are slow to come, and sometimes difficult to perceive...I found it helpful to journal...re-reading mine months later, I was amazed at how far I had really come.
Connecting into forums like this one is a good way to alleviate some of the feelings of isolation. I hope you'll continue to come here and share your progress with us.
