Hi,

My brother was stabbed in an unprovoked attack while walking home 5 months ago and has suffered a c5 spinal injury.

Hopefully after 5 months he will shortly be moving out of intensive care into rehab and is about to come off the vientilator. He has been an inspiration to us all and has shown fight and resolve I never thought he had. His attitude has given us all hope for the future and I hope his improvement may continue.

Me and some friends (although the numbers are growing rapidly) are going to do a fundraiser in May whereby we are cycling from London to Geneva and then up into the alps. (600 miles in 6 Days). To me it sounds ridiculas but we will give it a go! We will be raising money to aid my brother, raise awareness in knife crime but prodominently either spinal care/research. Hopefully, if timed correctly the trial/sentencing of the evil individual(s) who did this and the current problems with knife crime could make this a significant fundraising event.

The reason for the post is three fold.

1. to introduce myself I think I may have some questions for you all in the future
2. ask if any of you in the UK have thoughts on the best Spinal charity to raise funds for
3. Any do's and don'ts/ positive experiences from fundraising previously.

All thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Will

Sory to hear about your brother, my prayers will be with you.

My mother put a benefit concert together for me after I was injured. We raised about 3000 US

I wish you luck!

I'm sorry to hear about your brother, and wish you all the best with the cycle ride - great idea, and some very worthy causes!

I did a spot of fund raising for my friend last year, though I wasn't as adventurous as you - me and some mates did the Monopoly Pub Crawl (only none of us drank as I can't handle a lot, and it would have been inapropriate considering alcohol was a major factor of the accident!), and managed to raise £300 (GBP).

All I can say is people are very generous and understanding about such things.

Hi

Firstly sorry to hear about your brother - it is always a huge shock and a huge change to life.

We have just started up Standing Start which brings an exercise based programme to the UK. We are moving to a new facility but need help to buy equipment. Our website is at www.standingstart.org - we can make a difference but get no direct funding - if you want to know more then contact me through the website

Any help is gratefully appreciated

Peter

If you changed the subjuct of this topic to include the word "Questions Regarding Fundraising" you might get more ideas. Otherwise it sounds like your asking the good people on this site for money. I almost didn't look either.

Good luck to you.
