We made the bar work out of 35mm Aluminum with 3mm wall thickness and used aluminum checker plate for the foot holds. We even made our own bar bender and after a few attempts made one that didnt kink the bar and produced a nice radius. I've had only light crashed but so far its holding up well, hopefully it will hold up in bigger crashes but is seems quite sturdy. Oh and i got it anodized black to blend in with the rest of the bike.

We also managed to mount the whole thing to the bike with no welding or drilling the frame.
