Hi,

I am new to the forum and would like to introduce myself.

I live in Uk and have T12 Incomplete SCI. Car accident in USA in 1981. Long time ago. Can walk with walking stick. Still suffer spasms and have been taking Baclofen for 28 years. Very little sexual function. Married with no kids. (obviously). Have Harrington rods implanted in spine. Bladder and bowels pretty good.

Happy to give advice to others based on 28 years experience.

Jim

Hello,
My husband is currently in the hospital with a T12 incomplete spinal cord injury. Today marks the 3rd week of the injury. The doctors say his hip flexors are good, one knee flexor is good. They just saw some toe movement. Sensory everywhere is good. He started rehabilition 4 days after injury. He is very athletic, good health. Any advice on whether or not he will walk again. I read a lot of T12's with braces and walkers. Any fully walking? What about stairs.

Very concerned, wife.

Welcome to the forum Jim and Wifehopeful too! I'm sure you'll both give and get some great advice here.

And to Wifehopeful, your husband sounds like he's recovering quite well. All SCI's are quite different and you never really know what the final outcome will be - like walking ...etc. But he sounds like he's doing everything he can with the rehab and being in good health ... only time will tell. :)

Hi wifehopeful
My name is Mike and i am from Glasgow. I am a T12/L1 incomplete injury and have just joined the forum a few hours ago. My accident was 23rd August 2008, and i am able to walk un-aided although still have weaknesses in my feet, ankles and calves, which i am still working on. No two injuries are the same, but there is hope for your husband. I can also climb stairs not too badly considering, although i have cauda equina which affects bladder and bowels, and nobody can say if this will recover or not. Just dont give up hope, and take care.

Thank you for the reply! How long did it take you to walk un-aided? When I asked the therapy doctor what type of Syndrome he has (like cauda equina etc) the doctor said none of these. Not sure I understand that. My husband also has an ASIA score of "C". Is this similar in your case? Today, they put him is braces where he tried to walk the parallel bars at 3 weeks post injury. I assume this is good. I have hope, but I wish there was more to go on statistically or factually, but of course, I hear "every case is different, every patient is different, etc." As the wife, and person standing by, it is hard to hear these words. I feel completely helpless.

Hello again
It took me 2 and a half weeks before they had me on the bars, although i had a chair for the 3rd and 4th week in between hobbling, walking and exercising. It does take time, i still feel myself getting a wee bit stronger everyday. Its a good sign for him at this stage. I was never told what level i was on the ASIA scale, but i think i would be a D. You are bound to feel helpless cos you want to make him better but cant. I think my wife felt the same at the start. But you are not helpless cos you are there for him and thats what matters.

Hi, Im new here too , also T12/L1 with cauda equina after having a dermoid tumour removed in 1997 although its started growing again and is inoperable at the moment. I can walk with ankle/foot braces and a stick, but have no bladder or bowel control so use catheters and anal plugs. However Ive really been struggling with UTI s and have found lots of tips / info on this site from others.

Hi,

Sounds very hopeful and very similar to myself. To get such recovery after 3 weeks looks god. Obviously every case is different but I am walking with a walking stick. Stairs are a problem but OK with a handrail. Has he had any surgery. Any help let me know.

Yes, he had rods and fusion to his back. He had a fractured T12. Doctor's keep using the word "bruised". I am not doing well today. It's been 4 weeks without my husband at home with our 4 year old little girl. Feeling very depressed today. I just want him to come home, and come home walking.

Everyone talks about spasms. He hasn't had this yet. Does this usually come later? Also, he says there is little pain. He walked 15 feet with a walker 3 days ago. Sounds good, but I still am having a problem being excited about that. Am I an awful person.
