I've been meaning to post this for months, but well the time got away from me. Here's a link to my boyfriend's website: Specifically to the page he put up about his custom Scion xB, describing the customization, what he was aiming for, why, and how he went about having the mods done to the car, inc ase this might help anyone else in choose a vehicle.

All in all he's VERY happy with it.

That's pretty cool! Have you guys ever checked out Honda Elements? They basically do the same thing and they also can have freedom motors conversions too. I love when an idea comes together like that!

Yup, but the Element's main problem for him, is that there is no pillar, and because of his balance issues, he needs the pillar to lean on while pulling his chair into the car, so it wasn't a viable option for him. The Element also sits quite a bit higher than the xB, so transferring wasn't as easy.

Of course--probably most importantly--cost was a HUGE issue in his decision. The Scion with this conversion cost MUCH less than most other "mobility conversions" The freedom conversion is pretty damn cool, but again that goes back to the cost issue. He plans to drive this vehicle for many years to come, until he basically doesn't have the physical strength to do the transfers in and out any more... by then we'll probably look at something a little more along those lines.

True suicide doors. I like.

How tall is your boyfriend?...because I'm at 6'2" and the B-pillars get in the way when i try to pull my wheelchair in. I'm also a t6. Does he put the entire chair in the back? Then it would be an excellent idea. Gives room on the passenger side for the gf.

Very nice fab work tho... shows you the possibilities...

But i'm glad you didn't do a gull-wing conversion... unless you're a delorean or an old school benz... it doesn't look right

He's 6'1" and umm, quite solidly built lol. He uses the B-pillar as support by reclining the front seat about halfway and then reaching out the back door (leaning on the pillar for balance) and pulling the chair in that way. He does put the entire chair in the back (although when me and the little one are with him I usually take care of the chair and put it in the cargo space). He also finds it easier to put it all there than having to drag parts across him and put them in the front seat, even when he's alone.

His original thinking on the gull wing was that it would also provide a bit of shelter from the elements while transferring solo, but as I said, in the end he has been VERY happy with it, and it was VERY reasonable, cost-wise.

niceeee.
i would not recommend freedom motors. they sell u the car and your thinking they will be so helpful since they do cover their work for a certain amount of years. but i have had lots of problems and they dont seem to care, ignorant, etc
