Hi ladies and gents. I was wondering if anyone out here can help me with a few subject matters. We are planning an 2010 wedding. We are really excited about it. We have the basic concept of what we want down. However there are 2 issues that keep coming to mind. 1. Pictures. He does not want a ton of pics of him in his chair. (hes c5-6 quadriplegic) We just wonder how to go about taking truly creative pics for us. 2. Dancing. He uses an manual chair. I stand 5 ft 7 and he comes to my rib cage area. Anyone with ideas?? :)
Dont judge a book by its cover.... You may be putting down a best seller!!

Congratulations! :) One picture idea would be to sit on his lap. Kind of like my profile picture. (Click on my name to see) Your wedding dress would hide the chair tires.

Sounds like it will be quite the wedding if it takes a whole year to plan!

My husband and I just got married in August. He is in an electric chair, so that made for a few challenges. In regards to the pictures, find out ifyour photograper has shorter stools for everyone to sit on. We got some great shots that way! Sitting on his lap, your dress will cover up a lot of his chair too. Also, my husband is not, but if your man is comfortable sitting in a regular chair, like a kitchen chair or something, that might be another option too. Now for the dancing part. Since you fiancee is in a manual chair, it might actually work easier for you since you could actually "lead" him around the dance floor. Just be imaginative. Practice at home and remember that people aren't going to be "seeing" how you dance...they will be "seeing" the love that you share.

First of all CONGRATULATIONS! This is such an exciting time...planning your wedding to celebrate the day that will begin the life you're going to enjoy with the man you love. I remember planning my wedding 3 years ago, and photos with the chair were something that we considered. So, our approach was to just try and capture several different poses on film(I'm sorry, none of which are truly creative)...close up shots that capture only your faces (although, this approach will not highlight the gorgeous dress you are going to wear), shots with you in his lap, shots with you stading behind him and leaning over his shoulder, and also shots that do include the chair as well...y'all will look amazing together with you standing by his side. Of course, you can also do as someone else mentioned and have your future hubby transfer over to another seating option if he's comfortable with that. My husband was not able to transfer to different seating, but he is a C6/C7 incomplete quad, so he was able to stand for a couple of minutes at the altar with his groomsmen by his side as I walked down the isle, and it made for nice photo ops. Also, a bit of a crowd pleaser that resulted in fun pictures was at the moment we were married and were heading down the isle as man and wife...my father-in-law pushed us out of the church as I sat in my husband's lap.

My photographer wasn't the most creative when it came to the chair, but many of them are...so maybe in searching for photographers you can find one that takes an interest in being creative and imaginative for you.

As for the dancing issue...we opted not to dance. Although, I'm sure it would be a beautiful moment if you sit in his lap during "your song."

I have photos of our wedding day if you are interested in how they turned out...I'm proud of them and love sharing them with others, but I won't bore you with them unless you would like to see them.

Again, congratulations and happy planning!

Sincerely,
tmac

ps we found a cake topper online that includes the bride sitting in her groom's lap as he sits in his manual chair. although i didn't leave it on my cake for every photo, it was fun and unexpected added detail in a few pictures.

Along these same lines; we are planning to get married in September. Those who have married did you sit on his lap for the vows? Did you stand next to him? Did you use a standing frame?

We used a standup wheelchair....honestly it was my only regret for the entire day. I wish that he would have just stayed in his wheelchair, and me either sit in a chair next to him, or stand. It didn't feel natural anymore for him to be standing.

Whatever you decide will work well though, as I think it's just a personal choice for you and him to decide together.

You have no idea how happy I am to hear that! I have never known him as a walking person so it would feel unnatural for him to stand! I'm hoping I can talk him in to letting me sit on his lap.

Spinner, I just wanted to add another perspective. I stood next to my groom throughout the ceremony...it seemed like the most natural thing for us to do.

Such beautiful photographs! It really is all very exciting to look at (my boyfriend has decided he doesn't want to get engaged until he's finished university because he doesn't want people to think that he might rely on my money to pay for his university fees etc... Yeah I'm sure I have an opinion somewhere in that! :D )

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE!!!!!!

Congratulations! Sure all will go well, our son married in April this year, his SCI is incomplete and he walks with the use of a stick, he selected a new one to colour co-ordinate with the principal colour. Thing is though, nobody noticed the stick, only the happiness in the face of bride and groom, so maybe, the wheelchair will go equally un-noticed.

Again - all the best!

Here are 2 pics of hubby and me getting married (actually after the ceremony) by the ocean in southern Kauai'i. I actually liked the way he was looking up at me when we were saying our vows. Mr. Hapa is 6' 2" and I'm 5' 7" or 6" not sure anymore, but when he stands up in his standing frame I can barely reach his lips to kiss him. I think I would have had to wear 5" heals instead of the 3" if he stood up while we got married.

We took the kiddies with us and they took the pics of us, but the last picture I attached was at the reception we had a couple of months after we got back. We hired a professional photographer and he was able to take some shots without showing the wheelchair. In this picture, I'm kneeling down with my train draped over my forearm. If you get a professional who's been in the biz a while, they should be able to find some creative ways to take pictures without showing the chair too much. That's not anything that really bothered us though.

The first few years after we moved to Arizona, I would set up our camera and take a picture of us in the jacuzzi or lounging by the pool (with drinks in hand of course) for our Christmas card. My hubby would just transfer onto a lounger, bench or in the water and people who didn't know my hubby was disabled had no clue when they received their card.

As far as dancing . . . we didn't do any of the traditional stuff people do at receptions like the first dance. We did dance though with everyone else and I just sat on his lap for the slow dances. We made sure his wheelchair was very clean and kept him off the blacktop parking lot and there were no problems with staining on my dress.

Sorry the last pic is a little distorted . . . I'm tired. :) But I think you'll get the idea.

We were thrilled with our pictures.. our photographer did a great job... she didn't ignore the chair... but didn't focus on it either... which was perfect, because that's pretty much life, right?

Best wishes and Congratulations!!

Aww, thanks y'all! It was the best day, ever. I wish and hope for everyone to have a blessed wedding day, it's such a special time! If you're on Facebook, let me know... our wedding video is on there, and it is amazing! You can watch it on facebook, or on our blog: www.lovelikethislife.blogspot.com.

On the blog, you'll have to scroll back a bit. We're trying to blog about our adventures, but we've been slacking (a.k.a we've been soooo busy!) lately.
Cheers.
