Hey there, I have a question, my boyfriend has had a fistula for about 8 to 9 months. Now the doctors have been waiting for it to go away on it's own, but it still has not happened. So my boyfriend now wants to have an operation which will reverse the fistula and have it put away. A small explanation, of what a fistula is....his fistula is in his abdominal area, and it constantly leaks any type of fluid he drinks or eats. He wears these bags so that the fluid can be caught in it, which need to be changed constantly, which can become a pain to keep up with, especially since my boyfriend also has a colostomy bag that he has to change. We visited a doctor and they told us about the risks, like in ANY surgery with a SCI patient or ANY type of patient for this matter, there are risks. Risks of infection, risks of another fistula forming, and a risk of my boyfriend not making it through the surgery due to infection, or any other medical reason. With all that he wants to go through with it, and I at first was really hesitant, but my boyfriend has had a rough year since his sci. I just want him to have some kind of normalcy in his life, and I think the operation will give him that initialed step that he needs.
Now, for the question, has there been anyone out there in this forum, that has gotten this surgery, and can help me out with feeling a bit better with doing the operation, it would mean that we are moving in the right direction, or is there anything I should be aware of? Please anything is welcomed. Thank You!
