Hi i just wanted to ask who is allowed to register here. Does everyone have a spinal injury here? I don't but i have an illness which has left me unable to stand or walk and use a wheelchair. I have no useful movement from the waist down. And i've lost feeling in my forearms. I'm 18 and this forum is brilliant i feel i can relate to a lot of posts but wanted to ask if everyone must have a spinal injury to join.

Thank you.

ummm i think it's supposed to be for people w/ SCIs but i dont see why you cant register to talk about physical issues. what illness do you have?

Welcome to the forum then!...Although the vast majority of us do have spinal cord injuries, we do have members with other conditions as well.

If you don't mind me asking, what illness do you have exactly?

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

This forum is designed for the purpose of discussing spinal cord injuries.

However ......

A lot of the topics discussed overlap other medical conditions such as MS, ALS, SB etc, so if you see a topic which currently affects you, or which you maybe are able to contribute to, then feel free to sign up and jump right in!

Regards

Shouldn't we be open and welcoming to anyone and everyone?

The more of the general public that join and get to learn about what an SCI is, how to avoid one, what to do, etc etc the better. I didn't know anyone that was disabled or anything about spinal injuries until I took the plunge, so it was all very new to me. This is something that many of us have in common. Wouldn't it be great if people felt OK with coming here and asking all sorts of questions and we answer them without moaning and bitching??

OK, the main theme of the site/forum is spinal injury, but we should be totally welcoming to anyone that wants to join us - "spread the word" and all that!

Too many of us crips complain about being segregated, treated differently, etc - then let's make sure we act normal and expect to be treated normally, and not segregate ourselves from others.

If we were to go that route, then perhaps that would be something deserving of it's own Thread/Forum... I think one of the primary reason we all gather here, is because it's a informal place where we can feel free to speak amongst ourselves.... I already get enough insensitive questions from strangers and the general public as is, why would we want it to overflow into one of the few remaining places we can genuinely call ours?

Simon has already put together a great forum resource on this site for those AB people who are curious about SCI... If they wish to ask a question, they should keep it in that forum. It would be horrible to start seeing random questions from AB's popping up in "subject sensitive" topics....LOFL, I mean do you really wish to explain the finer intricacies of what a BP and digital stimulation are? :)

Welcome aboard.

Have the doctors diagnosed your condition? What's going on with you, with your treatment plan?

Thank you for your aceptance everyone! :censored:

I don't have an exact diagnosis yet, i think for me in one way one of the hardest things is not having a name for it.

I started to become slow at running when is 14, and lost movement in my toes, then i developed drop foot in both ankles, and it's graduly progressed from there. I can't stand or walk now and i'm starting to find sitting upright more difficult and need more trunk support.

I've used a wheelchair since i was 15, i enjoy being active. And i have done so many more active things using my wheelchair than when i was able bodied. Some of the things i've tried and really enjoyed have been handcyling, climbing, abseiling and horseriding.
