Some of the tennis shoes I see young people wearing these days have extra soft sides and zip up the top of the foot. I haven't tried any, as I need that extra support, but they really do look quite comfortable.

Well I rotate between trainers and ordinary leather shoes dependiong on what I am wearing. I have supermarket £8 trainers which I am sure would last little time, but I am not walking on them.

Now I can't feel my feet so I ahve no idea what is going on in the shoes s I make sure they are big enough and then I wear thickish cotton socks. I have not had any problems this way.

Now, if you have some feeling I would suggest you find a good shoe shop and try things on, may wider than you would usually to make sure nothing rubs. Remember, nothing protects feet better that shoes from the bumps and bangs of wheelchair life.

Pre-injury...I'd always bought boys' tennis shoes, as I couldn't stand the tapered toes of women's shoes. I just liked that extra wiggle room. Now, since my injury, I'm buying one size larger in boy's tennis shoes. This after a night out when, unknowing, my toes had folded up under my foot when I had put my shoes on. I began feeling 'pukey' during that night, but couldn't figure out why until I got home and saw the shape of my foot! :D The larger size also makes it much easier to get them over my brace, which lessens my pain when putting everything on.

Rehab suggested "New Balance" tennis shoes as a good shoe to accomodate my AKFO. They're not specifically made for orthotics, but many say it's the best they've found.

My husband switches out between crocs (www.crocs.com) and some Ducks Unlimited mocassins that I got from cabellas (www.cabellas.com).

Wow, i am so amazed at how much i learn on this website everyday ~ i'm def going to get some crocs! thanks for that!

i have been wearing the same Birkinstocks for about 4 years, all year round. shoes definately last when you aren't actually walking on them! i just put thick socks on during winter, and i never ever find those little "cherries" (red pressure spots) on my feet no matter how swollen they become during the course of the day. no other shoe has been able to do that so far.

but i'm saving up for some bright orange crocs now! :)
the only thing to worry about .. is worry
