HI,
I GOT DIAGNOSED WITH CPS ABOUT 7YRS. AGO 2YRS. AFTER THE MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT THAT LEFT ME A C5-C6 QUADRIPLEGIC.
I STARTED TO LOWER MY DOSE OF NARCOTIC PAIN MEDS. ABOUT 6 MONTHS POST ACCIDENT AND INCREASE MY GABAPENTIN AND
BACLOFEN FOR PAIN. SHORTLY AFTER, I STARTED FEELING MISERABLE WITH PAIN, MUSCLE SPASMS, SEVERE ANXIETY AND MANY
SLEEPLESS NIGHTS. MY DOCTOR TRIED TELLING ME IT WAS PHANTOM PAIN AND MY BODY NEEDED TO REGULATE ITSELF. SHE GAVE
ME A SCRPT FOR ATIVAN AND SENT ME ON MY WAY PISSED OFF. THINGS DIDN'T CHANGE MUCH UNTIL I FINALLY GOT A REFERRAL TO A
PAIN CLINIC. AFTER I FILLED OUT ALL THE GENERAL INFO I HAD TO FILL OUT AN EXTENSIVE QUESTIONNAIRE ABOUT MY SPECIFIC PAIN.
THE DOCTOR CAME IN AND ASKED A FEW MORE QUESTIONS AND THEN TOLD ME I HAVE CPS. HE INITIALLY PUT ME ON MS.CONTIN 3X A DAY
THEN, AFTER 3YRS SWITCHED ME TO METHADONE 2X A DAY WHEN I DEVELOPED A TOLERANCE TO THE MS.CONTIN. HAS ANYBODY GONE
THROUGH SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH A SPINAL CORD INJURY PAIN AND THIS DIAGNOSIS.
THANKS
ANGELO G.

I have never heard of or been diagnosed as having centralized pain syndrome. Though I'm an incomplete so it isn't quite "phantom" pain for me. I do however have generalized pain below the point of injury along with nerve pain. The mechanism sounds to be similar as to how it was explained to me. As I am a partial I was told it's like stereo head-headphones with a short in the wire and with the "static" resulting in both the pain and lack difficulties I have with motor control and sensation.

Don't know if that helps or not.

Phantom pain itself has been known to medical science for sometime; many amputees have claimed to feel pain in a limb that no longer exists.
