I take care of someone in my home whom I call my sister. She became a T11 para on Feb. 18, 2004.
Right now she is on Social Security Disability. I know she will have to be re-evaluated in 2011 unless they decide to do it sooner. Soonest would be 2007.
My question is, do a lot of para's stay on disability? I guess anther question would be is there anyone out there who has been on disability for a long time?

I've been drawing SSDI since '87. For quite a few years, I'd have to go through their whole re-evaluation thing, but I think they finally figured out that this spina-bifida and the other complications that go with that weren't going away. So about five years ago, I received a letter from them stating that I would not have to be re-evaluated again and to contact them if my medical condition changed...which it did, for the worse, in '03.

You can work while drawing SSDI, but there is a limit on what you can earn each month....over that, and they deduct the difference from your monthly SS payment. If my memory serves me, the limit is around $500.

Female. Incomplete para following a cord stroke in '03. Spina-bifida, severe scoliosis. 18 surgeries total...five spine-related: Three fusions w/hardware, two tethered cord releases.

Thanks for the info. If she stops getting a check then we will be in trouble. Won't be able to pay the mortgage. It's stressful but such is life.
I just don't know if they will continue to consider her unable to work. It's frustrating.
