Hello,

I have been having increasing problems when going out to places like stores or outdoor fairs because I can only walk tops 15 min. without feeling like I am going to loose my legs and hit the floor. I had a failed laminectomy on 2 discs and excessive scaring all around the spinal cord. I am getting tired of waiting in the car while someone goes into a store we know doesn't have any wheel chairs for customers without the ability to walk and shop for more than just a few minutes. We unfortunately own convertables and I do not drive at all anymore, but am looking for advise for some type of small colaspable scooter that can fit in a trunk. Something light weight so maybe I can just go down the street to the drug store or antique markets, or things like that and they do not have wheel chairs available for people to use. I am getting sick of just going to walmart (not that its bad but I would love just to go to the mall or something.

Does anyone have any good tips on what type is out there? I live in south central Pa. just by Gettysburg and any help would mean the world to me and my husband.

Thank you,
Nipper

Hey there...Unfortunately, there really are'nt a lot of options for you if you want something with power. There are ultralight and portable manual wheelchairs you can get that would aid your mobility quite a bit. However, if you are sold on a powerchair, you can expect most power chairs (even the jazzy scooters) weigh at least 70lbs+ and not be very easy to get into a car. I'm sorry, I wish I could give you better news, but powerchairs have always been everything but portable!

I use a scooter but only for local mooching around my neighbourhood. Because I am heavy, it is pretty large and although it does come apart for transporting in a car, it is not something I do. Too much hassle.

There are, however, many different light-weight scooter available that will go in a car fairly easily via a portable ramp or plain muscle power, especially if you have someone to help. Do a Google search for mobility scooters and you will be spoiled for choice. If you don't want to spend a lot, look on eBay. There are usually hundreds to choose from.

As others have said, a folding manual chair is probably your most flexible option because it is much less effort to transport. Unless you need to be in a chair most of the time, bog-standard wheelchairs can be purchased for a very modest price. I got a new steel folding chair for £104 from eBay. OK it's pretty crap and heavy to roll around, but good enough leave in the car and use for shopping and hospital trips etc..

Try craigs list,,,, you might be surprised what you'll find.
And they make lifts for those things, that will lift them right into the trunk,,,, and platforms that attach to the rear of you car that you carry the scooter on.

Lot's of choices,,, but be selective.

Try a Viper powercycle. It attaches to any manual wheelchair and is easily removed and put in the back of a car.

www.TeamHybrid.co.uk

I think they have agents in America and Canada now.

Another thing they do is sell "power packs" (motors, etc) so you can assemble/build one yourself. Mark, the owner is paraplegic and built one that went something like 35mph!

Thanks SCSS,

I was reading something that said there was a light one out there but I guess the person on the forum was wrong. I also have a problem with my neck which effects the strenght of my arms and is litterally a big pain in the neck lol. Well I think I will look into the lightweight one and at least I will have it for any summer carnivals, our yearly antique show in town - I guess my husband will be getting more muscular now lol.

Thank you again,
Nipper

HI,
If you are looking for a small scooter try www.goldentech.com then click on ride, then on compact travel. Goldne has a warehouse in PA. You can also click on local dealers for your area. Another place to try is imc-heartway.com they also have small transport electric scooters.
If I can help further just call me at (810) 577-8012
Good Luck Shaun

Not sure but perhaps something like this could help. It is a trailer for a power scooter. It may be something you could look at perhaps.

Thank both of you for looking into this for me, my husband and I are defendately commited to finding the right light weight scooter that can fold up and fit in the trunk of the car (we have a sepring convertible. I just was visiting my daughter and grandkids and we went to a flea market and I am always in pain when I walk, but this was outrageously painful and everyone was way ahead. I just have awaken at 10 pm from sleeping all day with my legs and back in such pain I just cannot stand it anymore. I was suppose to call my ins. co. to find if they will cover anything like this today, but alas my body said not today. Will call and find out tomorrow.

Just wanted to say again thank you all for sharing all the info you have sent me.
