Hi the hand controls i have i paid for myself as i had no advice at all about getting a car at the time or about getting a grant to pay for them, what i want to know is do i keep the controls when the car goes back seeing as i bought them???

Also how long before your next motability car would you apply for funding towards the deposit its the second car that i will be needing help for funding as said i was never given any advice when getting my first car.

Your message is a bit confusing, so I'll just anwer the question I think you asked. You should be getting higher rate mobility allowance along with a care component. This mobility allowance is what they take off you in exchange for a suitable vehicle. You take proof of that benefit along with your driving licence to the car dealership (you can choose any new car, but you have to pay a small amount when you pick the car up, more for a more expensive car). They fit the hand controls for you and the standard hand controls come free. They pay for everything out of your mobility except petrol, and in 3 years time you get a new car x hope that helps x

Yes the reason i paid for hand controls was the motability changed there policies a few months after i got the car to include the controls in with the motability componant when i got the car it was down to the individual to pay for the controls.

I got the car with no deposit at the time thats what the car was.
The car is due back in a few months and the car i want has a deposit on it that i need to pay but the motability have funds to give grants towards the car as i cant afford the deposit in full but i dont know how long in advance i would need to apply for the grant.

i'm on motability and as far as i understand, you keep what you pay for, so the controls are yours to take and put on your new car.

If you think you can sell them or use them, take them off and sell them on e-bay. I wouldn't be using a set of hand controls on a second car unless it was the same model. Modifying them to fit could cost the same as new set as the material cost is low and the labour cost is high.

Cheers for the replies.

Does any one have any idea as to how long in advance you need to apply for the grant from motability for the deposit for the car?

Why not telephone Motability and ask them. They've always been helpful when I have telephoned with a question.

hi :thread jacked:

as far as motability goes, be very push with them and keep records of all your correspondance as they can lose things really quickly as easily :censored:

How long you keep your cars, if it is not adapted then you return them every 3 years, but if it is adapted (I don't know whether just hand controls is considered this sort of adapted) then you change it every 5 years.

I would suggest you apply for your grant at least 6 months you are due to change your car, i didn't and only had about 2 months and it took them over a year to sort everything out (I was ordering a WAV).

You DO need to keep on top of them though cos without it they would just leave you alone and it could take even longer lol, I'm not sure if you get to keep your hand controls though sorry.

Hope you get everything sorted out

Im just going through the same thing as Im trying to end my contract early plus get a grant for a new vehicle as Im going to need a 7 seater plus enough room for wheelchairs and buggies etc. Anyway I spoke to Motability and you will still have to pay £200 on top of your grant, plus you need to give them reasons why you NEED a certain car, and not just because you fancy it! As there are currently 35 automatics available with no deposit you need to be ready to argue your case.

Hope this helps
L.

PS I spoke to Motability and they told me to put your application in 3 months before you want to change but I guess sooner rather than later is a good idea.

I had to really argue that i needed the car i did, i had demos of several different cars available with and without a deposit and itemised good and bad points, i then had a drs letter that justified my reasons (my GP is very good and i wrote the letter and she signed it lol)

Also the dealer where i got my car from let us off the £200 cos we could go and pick it up, leaving the old one there as the charge is with them not Motability, it also meant we got it earlier  . It's always worth a try to see if they will do it, I got mine from Brotherwood and all through the process they were brilliant.

:dunno:
