Are you able to drive just by yourself without needing help with putting your wheelchair somewhere?

Jaquie,
Seems a very odd thing to say, "good thing about accidents are settlements".
I can't think of much good coming from an accident other than everyone surviving it and NOT being physically harmed.

I was saying that although accidents suck there are positive things that come from them. Trust me, I would much rather be able to go back to normal than have this car.

How many people got settlements? I ran a stop sign and hit a truck (no alcohol or drugs involved). Nobody else was really injured, but I had no recourse to file suit against anyone. BUT, that didn't stop the people that I hit, who were treated and released without hospital stays, from filing a $500,000 lawsuit against me. Anyway a couple years later it goes to court and moments before the judge comes out, my insurance company's lawyer and their lawyer settles with them for a total less than 50K.

I am in the middle of a malpractice suit I really can't say much except this; somehow they calculated the lose of use of my feet and bowel and bladder is worth $15,000 and 50% of medical bills incured as a result. :mfrlol:

Well looking at it realistically, Dave, I'd be well pleased if all I couldnt feel were my feet, and I had a bit of foot drop! I'm still trying to get my head around your comments in your about me page saying that you were paralysed from the waist down and told you would never walk again?? Bowel and bladder stuff does suck, but your only L5/S1! You've got off lightly compared to most ppl on here, maybe some optimism or some positive remarks wouldnt go amiss sometimes!

Wow, ems, that was really harsh. No matter what someone's disability is, it doesn't make that person's life easy, they still have a disability and have to deal with the issues that come along with that. Of course some people have it worse than others and have to deal with a lot more daily hell but to belittle someone else's struggles is never cool. This is indeed a sensitive subject and I don't think ANYONE with a spinal cord injury at any level has EVER "gotten off lightly", even if they are one of the lucky ones who've recovered enough to be walking again or whatnot.

A little research on Cauda Equina Syndrome, and a closer look at what Dave actually wrote on his about me page, might make you want to review these unnecessarily harsh comments.

Haha. I will get a picture up asap. I think I'll stick with the cars top off since Mom didn't bless me with nice big boobs. LOL.

As far as hand controls, my right side is normal again minus a few sensation issues. I'm very lucky.

I did read his page, and yes I do know about cauda equine injuries, my partner also has a cauda equine injury, only problem was 20 plus yrs ago they sat him in a chair and told him to get on with it basically, he had transverse myelitis, though they didnt understand what that was back then. Had the right care been given at the time, he would be walking!! But sat in a chair for the remainder of his teens and beyond, contractures and other problems associated with no movement have meant that walking now is not an option.

Another girl at basketball is L5 complete, she walks with AFo's. I'm not actually trying to compare ppl, but I just want you to know that I do understand this level of injury quite well. I may not know everything about his case, granted, but back to my comments, I realise not everyone see's the positive in their life all the time, but I also think it does no good to always see the negative, and thats what I was trying my hardest to say.

But I apologise to all I have offended by asking how being L5/S1 means paralysed from the wiast down, and never walking again, I've just never heard of it in this age of technology. I do realise that dave is a slightly larger bloke, and I do realise this may have some bearing on the matter, and Dave, I apologise to you for sounding so harsh, I really didnt mean it to come across like that, but surely you understand that if I wrote that I am T12 and paralysed from the chest down, you'd be asking ME questions!!

All I really wanted to say was .. "....Always look on the bright side of life, de dum dedum de dum dedum dedum...."

When I teach wheelchair skills with BackUp, we share lot of stories about ppl, people who we've met at other spinal units and some we know personally, we try to make the learning fun, but also make them aware of others. One of the guys that comes with us sometimes is C2 and when he turns up and does his stuff, everyone that that was grumbling 5 miunutes before suddenly seems to get a new ray of hope, cos they know that thier life may not be soooo bad afterall. Now our friend who is C2 shows them his tricks with his blowdarts etc.. .. taking jelly sweets off the top of the white papper board, and they are all gobsmacked.

So yes I do get to know quite abit about differnt injury levels and how it affects each person. Yes some have it tough, and some have it better than others, but some realise how good they have it, and some dont. I'm a mere flesh wound, compared to alot here, and I know it.

congrats on the car, my mom has a new bug and she loves it, she's an a.b., being able to drive again is so nice, i had to wait 2 yrs. post injury before i could begin the process of driving, luckily i had my van built so my friends could pick me up and take me out while i waited.

here's a car that's bigger, my friends have actually put rock band in it and played, quite easy to get into & out of, bad on gas though.

have you looked into a Subaru, my brother has one and we've loaded myself into it with a manual chair and there was a good amount of room in it.

My thoughts entirely.......so
Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you......

PS Love the car Jaquie :-) Enjoy!
Once I thought I was wrong..... but I was mistaken
