Just been reading my Horse and Hound ( for all you non-horsey people, or those not in the UK, this is THE magazine to follow equestrian sport here in GB ) and seen you got a great write-up Emma ! It is always good to see news of para-equestrian events in the magazine and hopefully it will help with your search to attract sponsors etc. Do you get help from the coaches and other competitors in that area ? Some photos on your website would be great too !

Congratulations again !

Thanks again Jane! Yeah Im all about promoting Para Equestrian, especially here in Scotland, as not much happens up this way with regards to Para Dressage! I havent really got to know anybody that well yet to start asking those questions, although they are really helpful with other advice! Im will hopefully get round to putting some more pictures up!

Hope your well!
Everything will be alright in the end, if it's not alright then it's not the end!

Hi Everyone, Doodle especially,

There was some para-dressage at Northallerton here in Yorkshire last weekend and I finally managed to get to go. It was the first time they have run para classes at this venue and it was not very well supported with quite a few entries who did not turn up.
However I really enjoyed the ones I watched, some lovely horses and great riders. It was quite hard to follow as they were different grades and different tests with no break in between.

Hope all you riders out there are ok, I am still having a lesson once a week, mostly side-saddle.

Jane

Hi Jane! Sorry for my lack of contact!

It seems the further north they hold para dressage the fewer the entries, its a shame really! But competitions seem to coincide with each other along with training and you have to choose! Good to hear your still enjoying riding!

I have entered in a competition at Willerby Hill, East Yorks next month, if thats any where your neck of the woods?
Everything will be alright in the end, if it's not alright then it's not the end!

I will make a note of the Willerby Hill competition, it is not as close as Northallerton or Richmond but if I am free I will see if I can make it. I would love to see you and Murphy in action !!

WELL! I wanted to give you all an update, I don't want to come across as boasting or being pretentious by posting what I've been up to, but I thought some folks might be interested to know what I've doing since last update. At the end of last year I was accepted on to the Horsescotland Performance Squad, which is a funded programme, they provide you with training to keep you at a high standard for competing and help with travel expenses and such, So I was absolutely delighted to get on this, and was a bit dubious as to whether they actually mean to send me the acceptance letter! I haven't started any funded training yet but expect to next month. I have also qualified for The Para Dressage Winter Championships, and they take place at the end of March as part of The Para Winter Festival with lots of different parts to it like Freestyle to Music, Talent Spotting, Qualifier for The Para National Championships in June, so will be an exciting and busy weekend! I was competing in North Yorkshire last weekend at a Para Winter Qualifier which ran along side a Able Bodied competition and I have recently learnt that I received the highest score at the competition, which was a surprise as it was my first competition of 2011.

That is the just of it! I think its going to be a busy year this year!

Brilliant start to the year!!! Especially given the weather, I know my sister hasn't been able to keep hers in work so she hasn't actually made it to any "stressage" ( as we like to call it!!) comps yet. Good luck at your next one. X

congradulations on your success. Good work.

I never have jumped my horses in competition, just on the trails, over a fallen tree or something. Heard it was hard on their knees.

I would not give up riding after my injury (T 10). I had an adaptive saddle made so my back was supported, tooled leather wide velcro strap accross my chest for balance. I ride western saddle. Sirrup made with leather front, so toe can not go through it. I use velcro straps on back to help keep feet in stirrup. I keep my stirrups higher than before so I have more pressure on them for more balance. I love riding when I want. I use a Waverly-Glen hoist and have it cement nailed to my barn floor. I use it to raise my saddle up, and my self up to ride. My horses are all about 15 hands, so not a problem to get on since the hoist only goes up so far.

I had my mare bred to a stallion, "Mollys Pardner", she had a beautiful, conformation perfect filly. I trained her, and went from Florida, US to Tulsa, Oklahoma and showed her in color class as a yearling. We placed in the top 10 twice in the Palomino World Show, July 2010. I do not believe any other para has shown in open or novice color or halter class before. Only in the para shows. So I was happy with managing that goal. I know how to pack my van, so I can manage in and out of hotels, and they always have help there if needed.

I am not sure about the transferring of equipment to get on my horse from another location other than my barn. Would like to hear more.

I just enjoy trails, taking care of my horses. Have another foal due in April.

Just wanted to add my information to the Horsey talk. Isn't it great that when we enjoy something, we can still find a way to do what we want. It may not be everyone elses way, but we just do it our way and have as much fun.

Good luck to you all. Ride free. Let me know about your portable mounting equipment. May be something I could use if I go else where to ride. I live in a 1000's of acre forest with trails, so ride here everywhere, but would like to pull my horses elsewhere sometime.

Bye, Kay

I have a neurological disorder, not a spinal injury, but I deal with a lot of the same issues. I ride quite a bit in the summer, and am trying to figure out various lifts and hoists to make me more independent. My husband currently saddles my horse, and shoves me up and on my horse. I use a lap belt with quick releases, and bucking rolls. I think I will have to start rubber banding my feet into the stirrups this year, too. We do a lot of backcountry riding, and several pack trips each summer. Last year we packed a wheelchair in on a horse! It was pretty cool.

Kay,

I saw a para dressage site where the rider has a small lift on the side of her horse trailer, but now I can't find it. I was wondering if a scooter lift could be attached to my trailer to lift me. For now I can still get on from the side of the truck, but a lift would work better and be safer (I have fallen off the side of the truck a few times....whoops).

Do you have photos of your filly? Congratulations on your achievements with her!

I finally found the link to the trailer lift I saw online: http://www.angelika-...orseboxlift.pdf

I've been wondering if a scooter lift could be attached to my truck that could lift my saddle, and then myself, onto my horse.

Ha ha.....how is it working for you? I really want to do something like that. Typically my husband lifts/pushes me up, but my horse is only 14 hands and we have a 16 hand horse that I'd like to ride someday. Plus do some 'girl rides' where my husband wouldn't be there to lift me up.

Yeah I certainly did! Murphy spooked and took off with me at a competition in Aptil, and I fell off breaking my right Tibia! Slowly on the mend now, hopefully back in the saddle before the summer is out! :D
