my son would like to start fishing again, yeah!

To do this he would like to use a 4 wheeler to get to the river behind our house, I would like to have some sugestions as to what 4 wheeler would be best for his needs.

Oh my son is a T9 &10 para almost 3 years now. He has not done much since his accident and I am thrilled that he is wanting to get out again, he is just 24 now and is so smart, he has alot to live yet, he is just not so sure he wants to yet.

So I am looking to purchase what he needs as fast as I can before he backs out of his craving to fish again.

thanks for any info.

I have an atv but it's difficult to fish from it. Your son will probably have a balance issue as he sits on the atv as there are usually no backrests. I usually transfer off from my atv to my chair to fish, or use a golf cart for more back support and storage for tackle, poles etc. PM me if you have any questions and good luck.

By 4-wheeler, do you mean ATV like the Polaris Sportsman, or 4-wheel drive truck?

If ATV, I've got a Polaris 325 AWD still at my dad's house, and I LOVE it. It's got a CVT automatic transmission, full footboards, and selectable AWD. In order to shift into hi or park, you have to put your right foot on the footbrake, but I just pick up the right foot with my hand and drop it on the brake. It pushes just enough to activate the switch that allows it to go into high gear.

I fold the backrest down, and flip the chair upside down and backwards on the rear rack and tie it on with a black bungie. When I get to where I'm gonna fish, I just unload and go fishing. I have even dropped off the chair and backed the ATV up to the water's edge, and sat on the back rack. I use the bungie to hold myself on.

The balance on the ATV isn't as much of an issue once you get used to it. I was cutting donuts and slinging mud less than a couple months post injury (didn't go over so well with my mom...). There's a way to put a seat back on the ATV if he needs one. Hope this helps.

I too am able to ride it like I stole it !! However, riding with both hands on the handlebars and fishing with a rod and reel in both hands is a different ball game. Been hurt going on 12yrs and have good balance for a person of my injury level. I think something to stabilize his upper body as he fishes would be a good idea. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in my book. GOOD LUCK and get him involved in the outdoors. He has no limits.

John Deere makes a UTV called a Gator. When I put together both the money and the inclination, this will probably be my first choice.

If you get one without the rooof or rollbar, fishing,, or hunting would be pretty easy,,, and the seats ( there are two) have backs, already.

I found that I could get in and out of the one I looked at pretty easily. The problem would be with the gas and break. The set up is about the same as in an automatic transmission car. There are often many for sale, used,, both on ebay, and on craig's list.

There are also Rhinos and Mules,,, also side by sides.

Lots of choices,,,, but get him out there,,

wow, thanks for all the info. I like the idea of him being able to do donuts again, and slinging mud, his Dad won't!

I will see if I can get him to read all the responses as he should have some input into this whole thing if he won't then I will just shop on my own.

I think he was thinking that he could fish right from the atv, but as he would be able to take his chair along that would work.

I will get back to you I am sure with more questions but for now I am on my way to work, 3rd shift for now, until my son drives again, and he will.

thanks again eveyone,

I have a Polaris 2X4 250cc that I have used for fishing almost 17 years. I just drive over to our lake(about a mile) and park on the bank and fish away.

Works great!!

I use my dad polaris RZR to hunt out of and im sure you could use it to fish out of, other things that would work good is the yamaha rhino, kubota rtv, kawasaki teryx, all of these work great the Polaris has the most comfortable seats with a shoulder seat belt too.
