Thought this might be fun...

There are lots of lines I hear that seem to "strike a chord." (no pun intended)

For example:
"Did you find the directing sign on the
Straight and narrow highway
Would you mind a reflecting sign

Just let it shine within your mind
And show you the colors that are real"

from Spinning Wheel, by David Clayton Thomas (Blood Sweat and Tears)

I never did hallucinogenics, so it's not a drug-culture thing, but these bolded lines are reinforcing the off-beat path I'm on is OK whenever I hear the song, even if it's not what mommy & daddy raised me to aspire to, er, "settle for"...

Or how about:
"Hush now baby, baby, don't you cry
Momma's gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Momma's gonna put all of her fears into you
Momma's gonna keep you right here under her wing
She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing
Momma's gonna keep Baby cozy and warm"

from Mother, by Roger Waters (Pink Floyd - from The Wall)

The traumatic stuff I've been through has taught me that the fears and paranoid behaviors I was taught are ridiculous! Thank God I "got a spine" (so to speak!) after and as a result of my paralysis!

The smell of burning leather as we hold each other tight
Our zippers rub together sending sparks across the night
The Tubes

If that ain't passion, I don't know what is!
when it absolutely, positively, has to be destroyed overnight, call the Marines.

I will nevah, EVAH take a pinch from a greasy muddahf*@kah like you!

How 'bout if I spell it out for ya. D-I-L-L-I-G-A-F

Love the Tubes! Funny, I was just "rockin'" to Slow Ride (Foghat, of course!):

"I'm in the mood, the rhythm is right,
Move to the music yea, we can roll all night, yea.
Oooh, oooh ...

Slow ride, take it easy - Slow ride, take it easy
Slow down, go down, got to get your lovin' one more time
Hold me, roll me, slow ridin' woman you're so fine"

Sometimes fast & sparky is good, too!

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you'll find love,
And don't forget son,
There is someone up above.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man.

When my mother was dying she told me to listen to that song.
Never explain--your friends do not need it and your enemies will not believe you anyway.

Awesome!!!

How bout some Don Henley:

"What are these voices outside loves open door
Make us throw off our contentment
And beg for something more?
Im learning to live without you now
But I miss you sometimes
The more I know, the less I understand
All the things I thought I knew, Im learning again
Ive been tryin to get down
To the heart of the matter

But my will gets weak
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think its about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you dont love me anymore"

And some haunting (for me) lyrics from The Eagles' Desperado (a song I've never warmed up to, but I love these words):

"Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get"

I'm a big fan of the book Johnathan Livingston Seagull, many know of my love for the ocean and its wonder...thus Seagull by Bad Company hits home for me; one of many songs...this is a great thread, thank you a la carte

Seagull by Bad Company

Seagull, you fly across the horizon
Into the misty morning sun.
Nobody asks you where you are going,
Nobody knows where you're from.

Here is a man asking the question
Is this really the end of the world?
Seagull, you must have known for a long time
The shape of things to come.
Now you fly, through the sky, never asking why,
And you fly all around 'til somebody, Shoots you down.
...
Only after we have lost everything, are we free to do anything.

Not really Rock 'n' roll, but these lyrics rang a bell with me

3 shades of black is where I come from.
Depression, Misery, and Hellacious fun
No we're not the kind to turn our backs and run
coz 3 shades of black is where we come from.
We are a certain breed and we don't like you.
Some are junkies some are freaks and others are everyday ghouls.
No one will ever know what we've been through
and we are proud in the light of the moon.

Hank Williams the 3rd - 3 shades of black
Never explain--your friends do not need it and your enemies will not believe you anyway.

Abridged Lyrics to World Without Tears by Lucinda Williams :

If we lived in a world withought tears
How would bruises find
The face to lie upon
How would scars find skin
To etch themselves into
How would broken find the bones

If we lived in a world without tears
How would heartbeats
Know when to stop
How would blood know
Which body to flow outside of
How would bullets find the guns

If we lived in a world without tears
How would misery know
Which back door to walk through
How would trouble know
Which mind to live inside of
How would sorrow find a home

How would broken find the bones
How would broken find the bones

Sorry I didn't know there would be a test. A lot of us can't quote verbatim all the words from a song which is why I added the link - so other old deaf buggers like me can quote them even though we can't all quote or hear them exactly.

Until I heard the words quoted on the radio from one of my favourite Rolling Stones songs (undercover of the night) I still thought some of them were "100 000 dead sparrows, lost in the jails of South America" when they were actually "One hundred thousand disparos, Lost in the jails of South America". Anyway, enough of the rant bit. :muahaha: I do know what you mean though and take your point which is why I abridged the song and didn't post the whole thing originaly. I do like the thread though, great topic.

As for what the words mean to me, I suppose you'd have to listen to the song. I kind of thought they were pretty self explanatory when I posted them but then I have heard it. The slow beat of the drum and the guitar give it a moody feeling which as with a lot of Lucinda's songs, along with her voice it gives a lot more meaning and emotion to the words. To me it highlights the tragedies and sadness that so many people go through on a day to day basis and of the struggles and consequences we all face in different ways in our different lives whether they be as a result of accidents, sickness, violence or whatever.

It also makes me think a lot of us could do with living in a nicer, kinder or less unforgiving world without all the sadness or tears sometimes. Great slow music to have a few drinks over at a late Summer Saturday afternoon barbecue. Having said that, Lucinda Williams is actually a Country singer and perhaps the words aren't as descriptive as some of the others on here. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder however and I believe it is a beautiful song for so much more than just the words I posted above. Her voice makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up sometimes though and to be honest I have never liked Country music until I heard her album on the radio one day and had to have it. Suppose I should have posted these words in my first post but I just got home from work and have been on a computer all day.

"I cant help about the shape Im in
I cant sing, I aint pretty and my legs are thin
But dont ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to"

From Peter Green's (vintage Fleetwod Mac!) Oh Well

Don't guess an explanation's required on that one!!! :th_driving1:

Ohhhh Kay! I've heard that lots of times... Just never had a clue what they were saying!!!! Sheesh, I always thought it was "C.W. Flat" but that didn't quite work... :P

I don't know anyone who would shoot a seagull... I don't think I've heard of anyone eating 'em, but I guess you could eat anything if you're hungry enough!!!

Thanks for clearing up a longtime mystery for me, StillFingers! Guess I owe you one

The song for me is about freedom of thought, something many people are deathly afraid of, laws are passed to stifle abstract/creative thought...being comfortable is but a cage to hide within and that coffin seems, for me, a waste of precious time.

Jerry

In my 52 years of life there is one song that is at the top of my list, the artist and his thoughts are timeless...

Imagine by John Lennon

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Only after we have lost everything, are we free to do anything.

First: Thanks Slowlegs, for the Lucinda W. lyric - I could hear her rasping that song without knowing it, and it was very moving still, thanks.

My first true memory of a song describing my exact emotion at the time/striking a 'chord' in me, must be Led Zeps 'Thank You'

If the sun refuse to shine, I would still be loving you
If mountains crumble to the sea, there would still be you and me

Very naive I know, but it holds a bit of truth to this day even though I haven't seen her for many years.
Smile! See me:)

Amen to that.

Normally I trim posts I respond to, but those words need repeating as often as possible and to as wide an audience as possible.

These sentiments should be the goal of every single person on Earth. Then we might find peace. One day .......perhaps, but sadly we will all be long gone by then.

My dad whispered these two words...Never Surrender...just seconds before my sci surgery...this song/lyrics from the group Triumph gave me hope, reminded me that it was okay to continue on my road less traveled...kind of the black sheep of the family I've always been on a different path/journey.

Never Surrender by Triumpth

Out in the streets inspiration comes hard
The joker in the deck keeps handin' me his card
Smilin' friendly he takes me in
Then breaks my back in a game I can't win
Jivin', hustiln', what's it all about?
Everybody always wants the east way out
Thirty golden pieces for the Judas kiss
What's a nice boy doin' in a place like this?

Never Surrender - keep your dreams alive
Never Surrender - hold your head up high

Modern apathetics; you got plenty of nothing to say
Some are born to follow: some will make their own way
Today you found a hero tomorrow you'll forget
You're lookin' for convenient truth you haven't found it yet
You don't make commitments no time for regrets
Easy come and easy go and easy to forget
You don't ever take responsibility
Don't you know that part of you is part of me

Never Surrender - keep your dreams alive
Never Surrender - hold your head up high

Never Surrender, it's easier said than done
But you go to finish what's already begun
Never, that's forever, seems like such a long time
But I only got one life to live - It's gonna be mine

Never Surrender - we cannot be denied
Never Surrender - spread your wings and fly

I like dissecting lyrics, 'cus lets face it . . . they aren't always that great in one lump sum. Once in awhile tho you get lucky. This song just happens to be so true, especially the older I get. Ho hum . . . .

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but your older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Time- Pink Floyd
When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained. - Mark Twain

Dire Straits' Telegraph Road really got me to recognizing how many of our problems are simply caused by OVERPOPULATION. :mfrlol: Nix all the crap about carbon footprints until you get the explosion under control!!!!

A long time ago came a man on a track
Walking thirty miles with a pack on his back
And he put down his load where he thought it was the best
Made a home in the wilderness
He built a cabin and a winter store
And he ploughed up the ground by the cold lake shore
And the other travelers came riding down the track
And they never went further, no, they never went back
Then came the churches then came the schools
Then came the lawyers then came the rules
Then came the trains and the trucks with their loads
And the dirty old track was the telegraph road

Then came the mines - then came the ore
Then there was the hard times then there was a war
Telegraph sang a song about the world outside
Telegraph road got so deep and so wide
Like a rolling river. . .

And my radio says tonight its gonna freeze
People driving home from the factories
Theres six lanes of traffic
Three lanes moving slow. . .

I used to like to go to work but they shut it down
I got a right to go to work but theres no work here to be found
Yes and they say were gonna have to pay whats owed
Were gonna have to reap from some seed that's been sowed
And the birds up on the wires and the telegraph poles
They can always fly away from this rain and this cold
You can hear them singing out their telegraph code
All the way down the telegraph road

These Days the stars seem out of reach
These days there ain't a ladder onthe street
these days are fast nothing lasts..

These days-bon jovi

Don't want your aid
but the fist I've made for years won't hold or feel
no I'm not all me so please excuse me while i tend
to how i feel.

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go
Sing to me
Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go

Do you realise, that you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realise, we're floating in space?
Do you realise, that happiness, makes you cry?
Do you realise, that everyone, you love, some day, will die?
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes...
Let them know you realise that life goes fast,
It's hard to make the good things last,
You realise the sun dont go down,
It's just an illusion caused, by the world, spinning round.

This nailed my emotions when I was injured:

This my excavation and today is kumran
Everything that happens is from now on
This is pouring rain
This is paralyzed

I keep throwing it down two-hundred at a time
It's hard to find it when you knew it
When your money's gone
And you're drunk as hell

On your back with your racks as the stacks as your load
In the back and the racks and the stacks are your load
In the back with your racks and you're un-stacking your load

I've twisting to the sun I needed to replace
The fountain in the front yard is rusted out
All my love was down
In a frozen ground

There's a black crow sitting across from me; his wiry legs are crossed
And he's dangling my keys he even fakes a toss
Whatever could it be
That has brought me to this loss?

On your back with your racks as the stacks as your load
In the back and the racks and the stacks of your load
In the back with your racks and you're un-stacking your load

This is not the sound of a new man or crispy realization
It's the sound of the unlocking and the lift away
Your love will be
Safe with me
Smile! See me:)

Sorrow by Pink Floyd...the last verse

There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night
And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
And silence that speaks so much louder that words,
Of promises broken
Only after we have lost everything, are we free to do anything.

This one hit me while in the Hospital:

How To Dissapear Completely--Radiohead

That there
That's not me
I go
Where I please
I walk through walls
I float down the liffey
I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here
I'm not here
When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained. - Mark Twain
