I just got hooked up to the internet over the weekend and found this forum. My name is Allie and I am 20. I live in Texas.

My story is probably not much different then others on this board, but here it goes. I was a foolish 14 year old out on a joy ride on new years eve 1999/2000. We were driving along a curvy stretch of road and as we rounded a curve, were slammed into by a drunk driver head on.

I was the front seat passenger but had no seat belt on. I was thrown clear of the car and down a concrete embankment. From what the police can gather, I slammed lower back/buttocks first into the concrete. I was airlifted to Baylor where I underwent surgery.

When I awoke 8 days later, the doctors began to tell me bits and pieces of the accident. I learned that I was a C8-T1 complete. I also learned that the driver, my boyfriend, was killed instantly. My two other friends in the back seat had multiple injuries as well. It was a hard blow to say the least.

I spent 6 months in and out of rehab learning how to do all the normal things others take for granted. I am now for the most part independent and live on my own. I can drive with adaptive devices and can transfer with little help.

I met the love of my life 2 years ago at a convention. Sam and I started dating and I thank God every day that I found him. He completes me. We were married this past summer and found out this Christmas that we are expecting. I am very nervous/scared but my doctors have been great and I know in their capable hands I will make it.

Sorry that this post was so long. I look forward to getting to know everyone on this group.

:) Allie :mfrlol:

Hi Allie and Welcome to the boards!

No apologies necessary for a long post (and yours wasn't that long, compared to some of mine! :) :mfrlol: )....our stories just don't make for short reading, and I know there was a lot you left out for brevity's sake.

I'm just glad you've found a place to share your story, and I hope you'll gain as much support and information here as I do everyday.

How exciting to be expecting a baby!! Blessings upon blessings to you and your new growing miracle. My son is my very heartbeat, and I know you'll realize much joy and deep satisfaction in being a mother. God knows we all could use a little extra joy in our lives...I'm very happy for you. :D

he has welcomed Allie and congratulations, in advance I suppose, with the baby. A bit of advice are, I suggest you start walking out how you will manage with child as I found small children really awkward to deal with because they couldn't hang on and I couldn't move round with a wheelchair. There are some great slings now that you can put a small baby on attached yourself and then you can move around.

Undoubtedly talking with us later about such things have here from you more.

No offence *hopefully taken by this* but it isnt that hard to look after a baby. I havent got one but i have looked after a 2 month old for a week while its mother was ill. She wasn't hard to look after and i'm only 12 so it shows there ok and no harder for a wheelchair user to look after than a a/b

Apart from that congratulations to you!!!
Wish i could be experiencing the same feeling as you because i bet its good

All the best
