Aloha all, newbie to this forum from Hawaii. I have Hi BP and wondering if there is any evidence pointing to indwelling Superpubic catheters, or lack of movement of legs, etc, causing High BP? Here are my stats
1: Male 59 Years old
2: Very active, not overweight (no electric W/C !!)
3: Paraplegic T-8 for 42 years (with superpubic cath for 40 years)
4: Vegetarian, non smoker, no drugs, no alcohol
5: Active as I own and operate 2 businesses 12 hour days

None of the "normal" causes of HI BP so it has to be caused by hereditary, or is there something in the Paraplegic thing causing or contributing to it? I doubt the autonimic dysreflexia thing, but since the SuperPub Cath has bean in use for FOURTY Years and my bladder is quite a sespool, (but I am usually without any UTI's! Suggestions anyone? (I see Kaiser regularly for bladder biopsys, etc)

My first guess would be number 5. Even if you enjoy the work, the stress is part of that enjoyment.

High blood pressure certainly seems to be hereditary,, at least it is in my family. But I read somewhere that Hawaians, as a group, have higher blood pressure than people in other places... Maybe it's all that sun and sand,,, all that fun CAN'T be good for you,,, can it???

Aloha, Heredity seems to be the culprit. I am just a transplant to Hawaii in 1977, originally from BC Canada. I looked all over this forum and seems the only reference is to "too low Blood Pressure" So the Paraplegic angle seems to be discarded. even with the BP meds I currently take I still run at 145/90 all day and when really jamming 175/100 is possible. I am going back to the DR. and really brainstorm the different meds to get htis under control. thanks

Yeah, bumping 180 doesn't sound good. If your doc comes up with anything,,,,,, that doesn't involve diet or exersize,,, let me know.

I still think it's in the sand, tho.

Dear Sir,

You must keep in mind that autonimic dysreflexia can be manifested by high BP only - no sweting, flushing etc.
This condition must be treated with antihypertensive drugs untill the cause is found.
In many cases the particular reason can't be indetified.

Please ask your doctor to read this http://www.nature.co...df/3100680a.pdf article if the treatment of your high BP so far have not been effective.

Wish you sucsess

A late reply, but I have a vested interest in this subject. High BP helped to chew up my kidneys, and now I need dialysis three times a week to stay alive. Get that BP under control! It's really rough on your kidneys, especially at 180 like you described. I take 40mg Coreg and 20mg Azor a day to control my BP these days... talk to your doctor and get on some meds, pronto!
