I'd also be interested in any information on stem cells, muscle development and regeneration. I'm attending a Centre For Inquiry film screening called "Potent Biology: Stem Cells, Cloning and Regeneration" in June. It's a discussion by Douglas A. Melton, PhD who is a founding member of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute; and Nadia Rosenthal, PhD who is a leader in stem cell research and regeneration research and Director of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory.

I've heard of a few cases of stem cell treatment but they always seem to be from third world countries and I am wholly skeptical of their validity.

I am closing in on two years post-injury, T12 incomplete. I've had very good recovery but I still can't walk without assistance. I need a cane or nordic walking poles or my husband's arm. I am at the gym 20 hours/week and still am not seeing the results I'd like. The connect between the femoral and sciatic nerves and my left leg in very poor. Consequently, that leg still has a fair bit of flaccid muscle (atrophy).

I just finished a month-long treatment of femoral and sciatic 'nerve flossing' and will see how this month unfolds in terms of response but I'm not holding my breath.

I see my surgeon in September and will inquire about the progress of stem cell treatment in North America but if anyone has any current information, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Also, MTNBOY, you're either 'complete' (the spinal cord is completely severed yielding no motor function/no sensory function) or, you're 'incomplete' (the spinal cord is damaged and there may be some sensation and/or motor function).

Wayne State Study Shows Adult Stem Cell Grafts Help Paralyzed
via http://media.wayne.edu/2009/10/16/study-sh...rafts-increased

A new study by a Wayne State University School of Medicine researcher details the outcome of adult stem cell grafts in spinal cord injuries and how the procedure led to increased mobility and quality of life for patients...

...The injuries in the study patients were 18 months to 15 years old. The patients, ages 19 to 37, had no use of their legs before the treatment. One paraplegic treated almost three years after the injury now ambulates with two crutches and knee braces. Ten other patients ambulate with physical assistance and walkers (with and without braces). One 31-year-old male tetriplegic patient uses a walker without the help of knee braces or physical assistance. When the stem cell transplant and scar removal process was combined with an advanced form of rehabilitative training that employs brain-initiated weight-bearing movement, 13 patients improved in the standard measures used to assess functional independence and walking capabilities.

“We concluded that olfactory mucosal autograft is feasible, relatively safe and possibly beneficial in people with chronic spinal cord injury when combined with post-operative rehabilitation,” Peduzzi-Nelson said. “There are clear indications of efficacy based on neurological, functional and electrophysiological testing that justify moving forward to a larger, controlled clinical trial. ...

heya

I really think we need to be patient. At this point most of the stem cells treatments in western world are performed as clinical trials and they never guarantee anything.

I believe it is smart to wait even few more years to get the treatment that is well tested, trialed so we can benefit to the fullest extent possible. Stem cell treatment along with few others are

really promising but going to 3rd world countries and spending ~30k $ is rather silly. Dont get me wrong i understand that some people really want to get better asap and will do whatever it

takes but in my opinion it will only drain you from money, energy and maybe even will close your way to future advanced, tested stem cell treatment.

We need to realize that there are 1000s of treatments performed in this 3rd world clinics every year and from all this treatments only few end up with some sort of improvement.

Obviously we are going to read/hear only about the successful stories simply because its a part of their marketing. Its a business, very profitable one.

We are not going to hear about those hundreds of dissapointed people coming back with no improvements whatsoever.

That being said, this is only my opinion on this subject. I know that the breakthrough has been made and its a matter of time before some legitimate western facilities will start to offer some revolutionary stem cell treatments not only for SCI but for all kinds of diseases ect.

I think the question is when not if.

Good luck to you guys. What ever you will decide keep us posted.

Regards,Bart.

Contact Ratty for further lies and induendo

Get real guys

After all these stemcell research in various countries, not just the USA
There is still no evidence of it working
There is proof that it might work one day - but that aint today
When it does happen it is unlikely to be of benefit to old injuries

Thats good you got something going. I'm a complete so I've been the same since my thing happened. I think there would be more research done if you could keep the govt, and religion out of it. But then you'd also have many clones of sheep etc.... So I guess some regulation is good. Sort of........

There would be more research if there was more money in the field of SCI research and testing. Need to do some clinical trials to see if the stuff that works on rats will work on humans also. Clinical trials take some serious cash. Not everyone will work just to be the Medical Jesus, causing the lame to walk.

The stem cell treatments offered in the Dominican by Medra.com is ran by Willaim C Rader and is a scam company that offers fetal stem cell treatment to desperate people for $30,000. Don't do it! Do your research and be careful.

On another note, Reeve-Irvine Research Center in California is getting ready to start Phase I, FDA approved, embryonic stem cell treatments this August on humans with acute injuries. This will hopefully lead to treatments for chronic injuries. Many, like Dr. Wise Young, think a cure is possible within the next 5-7 years if the funding holds out.

There has been evidence of tumors from defective and untested stem cell treatments.

An interesting documentary about X-Cell Centre:

Save your reddies for a real treatment - or if you are feeling flush - contribute to Clinical Trial Networks. There is SCINetUSA and Spinal Research UK now have a Translational Science Fund.

Keep an eye out for Dr Youngs UCB + Lithium trials (SCINetUSA and SCINetCHina) as well as Dr Stephen Davies' work with Decorin which is making some progress.

Kevin had stem cells in China & his physical condition has improved quite a lot.
He was almost 5 years post injury.
Now stem cells (autologus ) are available in Thailand so perhaps he'll have them again as is not as expensive .

All you idiots out there thinkin of stem cells
Just remember this fact
The chord is a direct access route to the brain
So when the chord is damaged the damaged area is immeadeatly shut down and sealed with scar tissue to stop any chance of a brain infection, or we would all have died a long time ago
So heres the point
How does chord regeneration from so called stem cells attach itself to the damaged chord
IT CANT

All you idiots out there thinkin of stem cells
Just remember this fact
The chord is a direct access route to the brain
So when the chord is damaged the damaged area is immeadeatly shut down and sealed with scar tissue to stop any chance of a brain infection, or we would all have died a long time ago
So heres the point
How does chord regeneration from so called stem cells attach itself to the damaged chord
IT CANT

it depends on where the injury is and how sever i have had feeling every now and then that means there is a conection somewhere it deppends how much scar tissue has formed and i hardly doubt its a scam because im not paying a thing thay are putting all the money to pay for the injections and its hard to be sceptical when thay have had progress already its not a mirrical im not going to roll in the haspital then walk after the injections its going to still be alot of hard work training the brain how to do everything again thay already have proven that if placed in a spinal cord of a animal or a human the cells do become new stem cells its your call im going for it im hopefull and i was kidding about melting down my chair if i was able to walk again God willing i would donate it

t-5,

please post again after your procedure. i'm interested to hear if it helps you regain function. be careful in mexico. i've heard some horror stories. don't let anyone near you unless you see them wash their hands.

i know a girl who went to india for stem cell treatments and regained bladder function. she's a para who had been injured 15 or so years.

good luck,

hi fellow gimps! i'm a c 6/7 quad and have been injured since 1986. i was in a roll over hydroplane accident and it took hours for the paramedics to get me out of the car in the pouring rain. that definately wasn't my day. but alas life goes on!
