A question re: possible side effect(s) of longterm use of Fougera Surgilube, surgical lubricant to aid in digital stimulation bowel program.

My bowel program used to take 15 minutes to a half hour. It now takes two hours minimum. I understand that this may be partially due to the bowels relying on digital stimulation for evacuation rather than normal peristalsis. However, I'm also curious if the slow activity may be due to the use of Surgilube. The product contains chlorhexidine gluconate, a bacteriostatic chemical.

Do the bowels require certain bacteria to function properly? If so, does Surgilube destroy that bacteria and therefore cause the bowels to operate poorly?

Any ideas?

My reasons for changing over to the peristeen unit was because of this. My bowels just got too lazy. I was needing more and more bowel irratants, I changed them over, micro enemas, bisicodyl, magic bullet, nothing was cutting the time down, it just was making me feel ill, and not forgetting the time in the bathroom. I'd be in the bathroom for 2 hours plus, and then sometimes have an accident later in the day, sometimes the next day.
I went on the list for an ace operation. Three weeks after getting a date for my op, I found the peristeen .. 2yrs ago now ;) I now go every 3-4 days, and it takes me 25 mins! I think others might agree, its slightly erm messier, but i really dont care. It works perfectly, and you can either clear just the lower bowel out or get the whole lot out just by pumping more water in. I can now tell if there is any water left anywhere in my bowels by rubbing my tunny, and you hear it ;) Anyway, no accidents atall, I dont have to go as often, or for as long.. the system is a alternative now to having the ACE op, wth no hole in your stomach ;)

I would perhaps, if I was you, start looking into other methods of emptying.
