Derby Evening Telegraph Story

I'd like to know your thoughts on this one.
I'm not PC but I thought the paper justifies the use of the word 'crippled' as the guy was a pervert?
I found some of the comments outrageous.

I was very tempted to add that being in a wheelchair will do nothing but help his perversion!!!!
How does it feel to feel?

It is a shame he did not succeed in his attempt!

The paper could have used the word disabled. I am not over keen on the use of the word crippled but we all know there are much worse words used, so I am not going to get worked up over it.
If I fall out of my wheelchair in the woods would anybody hear me?

hey

it is a pitty he didn't succeed

but the word cripple don't bother me at all me and my other mates in wheelchairs refer to ourselves as crips all the time it may be different cause we are disabled and we use the word losely

probably not the right word to discrbe someone in wheelchair in a news story disabled would be more ethnicity correct

I think it's OK in the context, they would say the same about anyone.

Being in a wheelchair will not change his perversion, and I don't see why his being in a wheelchair should have changed his sentence. It shouldn't have been taken into account. If I committed a crime, should I get a lesser sentence because I am in a wheelchair? No. He's a criminal, one of the worst kind, and he should have been punished to the full extent of the law.

As for the use of the word "crippled" in the headline, it doesn't bother me. Sure, they could have used the word "disabled", and that would be potentially less offensive, but I didn't feel personally offended by the word "crippled". It's a word I hear a lot in a lot of contexts.

I'm sure the writer wanted to be shocking, as all our news seems to go for the punch and fear these days (swine flu pandemic! war on terror! gay agenda threatens fabric of society!), and that is a shame.

"Pervert left crippled"
Just a headline using the English language, I don’t see anything to get upset about myself.

I for one am glad he didn’t succeed in his suicide attempt, just as long as he suffers in terrible pain for the rest of his life.

Think I'll go to England and do some burglaring, womanizing, and all around bad stuff. And if I get caught . . . . no big deal. I'm in a chair, so I'll get the lighter "crippled sentence." :mfrlol:

In this climate of economic woe, I'm wondering if monetary pressures from above helped this judge lighten the sentence. Would it not be a sad state if money, not the nature of the crime, now determines punishment.

With regards to this slug of a human being, let his cell mates determine his fate...maybe they will do everyone a favor and lesson the economic burden his new "disability" now imposes. And, does being in a chair make it easier for this person/thing to expand his ugliness, no, he was already devoting his free time to his passion/sickness.

As far as the word cripple goes, I am, so no it does not bother me.

Being in a chair is not a free pass or excuse...

The trouble with this is over here is (rule 43 Protection rule for prisoners at risk) but this type of low life will probably go to one of the nice cosy prisons that cater only for nonses & perverts so he will be locked up with his own kind.

So this guy sexually exploits a bunch of kids and then when caught attempts the final crash scene failing abysmally.
I think that's frigging hilarious.

Bet he's feeling kinda STUPID right about now.
But that's OK. I'm sure his new care-givers, "Bubba and the crew" will see to it that bowel care is done efficiently, with due diligence and sufficient digital stimulation morning, noon, and night.

With any luck he'll have retained some sensation.
"Bubba, it that your finger?"
"Sho' is boss."
"Kinda feels bigger than a finger there Bubba"
"Oh no boss, jus' my finger."
"You usin' lube Bubba?"
"Plenty o' lube boss."
"Hey Bubba, how come we gotta do bowel care ten times a day?"
"Cos you got's a whole cellblock full o' care-givers you lucky lil' gimp. Now shut the f*@k up an' bite down on dat pillow, I ain't done stimulizatin' you."

What goes around, comes right back around. Don't it?

Thanks for all your replies. I've never tried to do multiple quotes before so this could be a messy post;

I don't really have a problem with the word cripple, infact I use it a lot to describe myself and think we all should if only to take away the power from the word, claim it as our own if you will.

Yes T Bird, my initial feeling was disapointment with my local paper resorting to "The Sun" style headlines.

I hope you two are joking! Witchhunt!
My take on the tiny sentence is that the judge thought he tried suicide not through shame but through fear of a long sentence, so having only cripped himself the judge ironically reduced his sentence to make the his disability that bit more sweet!

E-dog you get enough critical aclaim for your posts so I'm only going to say, keep up the good work son!

Shame? it wasn't shame that made him jump... it was fear of being held accountable for his crimes against children that led to his suicide attempt. If the british prisons are anything like the U.S. prison system he will probably get better healthcare than the more productive members of society.

He could serve his time in protective custody like the pedophiles here in the states, punk up and be with his own kind under a more watchful eye of the C.O.'s

I have no sympathy for a person that abuses a child, should take them behind the court house and put a bullet through their skull. All those shits that claim you can fix them? shoot them also.

Agreed. I do not believe that pedophiles or rapists can be "reformed". Sexual crimes are heinous and despicable.

As for the word "crippled" being used, well, it's just a word. It's an out-of-date word but considering the context of the article and what the asshole did, I'm not about to be more concerned with them calling him crippled than with his crimes against the kids. I doubt the newspaper has much sympathy for him either. If they did one of those inspirational type stories about someone with a disability, I doubt they would have used that word. They would probably use something ultra-PC like "differently abled". Hell, I call myself a gimp and crippled to friends all the time.

Pedophile: an adult who is sexually attracted to children

Well, if he wasn't sexually attracted to children why would he have child porn?

Wasn't there a case a few years back of someone getting the crap kicked out of them because they were mistaken for someone on the sex offenders list? Or am I misremembering things.

Dancin' Johnny, I think we'll have to get you T-Shirts that say "I'm not David Stocks"! :help: :D

Okay, maybe not. I'm pretty sure you'll be safe from any mis-targeted retribution.

You're thinking too hard about it because you're not getting enough sleep, mate. Let it go. Unfortunately, they're all over the place, and hey, better this one in your town was caught than he got the chance to abuse some local kids.

...cos there's people in every town who look at illegal pornography and at some stage in your life you've probably viewed what could be considered an illegal image. The story in this case is that he threw himself off a building.

Any word that communicates is a good word so every word has its place and that includes "crippled". It's a lovely word that rollsrolls off the tongue and can pack a punch when used correctly....as in the heading to this story.
