Hi Mark,

First you need to establish your wheel rim size. Look on the sidewall of your tyres for a mark that shows 507, 540 or 590. Ignore anything that says 24" x 1/38" etc as these marks can be confusing.

If you have 507 rims, then Schwalbe Land Cruiser 22" tyres are great, but unfortunately they don't come in 540. Ignore the 22 inch bit because the tyres are marked 24 x 1.75. (I told you they were confusing didn't I?) Don't ask me why 22 actually means 24. The logic is beyond my mental capabilities.

So to summarize, the knobbly tyres that you want to buy will have to have the same size in millimetres stamped on them, as on your existing tyres. This relates to the wheel rim size. Match these numbers and the tyres will fit. There are plenty of outlets selling knobbly tyres in the UK. Use Google to search.

You can safely fit wider tyres than you currently have because you will only be doing low speeds in the chair. The same might not apply on a bicycle.

Be aware though that if you do get wider tyres, you may have to adjust the length of your axle pins, or even buy longer ones and spacers ( washers will do ) to stop the wider tyres chafing on the chair frame.

There have been some very informative posts here already about tyre sizes. Use the search facility (top right of the screen). See here http://sheldonbrown....ire-sizing.html for the full story.

Hope that helps.

Sportaid.com

You can either buy the full wheelset (with the tires and rims, which can be pricey) or just buy the tires to go on a regular set of rims. Get your rim size ie. 24", 25" and then pick a tire. I have Kenda's 24 x 2" knobbies on a regular ole set of sun rims. The good thing about having a full separate wheelset is that you can just pop them off and interchange them with an everyday wheelset.

Hi mark,

Standard bike tyre size of 26 x 1 3/8 with this extra info (E.A.3) or (650 A) will fit your wheels.

Your balance shouldn't be really affected unless you change the size from, say, 25" to 26" and then you would likely notice a difference in the dump on your chair. I myself prefer 24" wheels over 25" or 26". I've used all three sizes over the years.

I recently got a pair of these wheels. Great value and good service from Mobility Scotland. They now come with Schwalbe Land Cruiser tyres and they go well with the FreeWheel attachment from Patd.

Pat also gives great service. In my case he made a custom clamp to fit my chair. Clever guy.

I have these wheels well over a year now and I can definately vouch for the wheels and their durability. I can also vouch for Mobility Scotland's customer service!

I couldn't find any deals there that included Schwalbe Land Cruiser tyres, and the package deals all seem to be a bit more expensive.

Hi,
check your sizes again because what you have said in this post is different to the size you put in your earlier post. :hammer:
In first post you say your size is 25-590 - If you now have got new 559's that is 31mm smaller..

Hi Mark - 590's are 26" wheelchair tyres and aren't used for much else and as such the choice of tyres is distinctly limited. However the big advantage is that a 25-590 tyre on a 26" wheelchair rim has just about the exact same outside diameter as a 26x1.75 tyre on a 25" wheelchair wheel (they're a 559 rim) so if you can get hold of some 25" wheels and put on the tyres you've bought you should be able to interchange the wheels with the ones you have without affecting the chair geometry at all and may even be able to not have to adjust the brakes. (it's the only good thing about 26" wheelchair wheels)

Actually, I do have a pair of 25" rims (Sun Rims) that I'm thinking of selling off. They're sitting around gathering dust as I now use 24" wheels. I'll let you know if I decide to sell them.

Hopefully mine should arrive tomorrow. I dealt with Bill at Mobility Scotland and he is extremely helpful; determined to make sure that I get the correct fit. I'm looking forward to getting them!

Update:
Wheels have arrived but it turns out that a 12mm axle pin won't fit in the axle sleeve on my Etac chair. Looks like I need a smaller pin if such a thing exists! I've emailed Bill to see if he has any ideas otherwise it's head scratching time.
*shakes fist at Etac and their non-standard sizes*
