hi I'm new to the forum so here it goes. I'm 3 years post accident and recently began to get some sense of normalcy returned to my life. after my accident i went on disability to help support my family during this life changing point in my life. so i go back to college and start driving you know the things we think about while we are in the hospital. well along with that i started doing small projects around the house because lets face it we don't get exercise just setting in the chair watching TV. i have neighbors in my subdivision that think i shouldn't be on social security and see my independence as a way of cheating the system. I'm not doing anything that wasn't taught to me while in rehab at the shepherd center in hotlanta. my question is how do you deal with these people? they go by my house stop and stare. :thread jacked:
thanks
james

Tell them to f-off! :P
Seriously, why would you collect SSI if you are able to work?
Believe me, your life will be improved and you will feel much better about yourself as productive and independent person. SSI should be you LAST resort!
Best,
Yasko

yeah i think if i catch them again staring i will give them the finger. i only went on ssi because of me having the accident . it has only been three years since my accident. i was a paramedic and because of my injury i could not perform my duties that i had went to college to learn. however i'm back in college, making the deans list every semester so far and trying to get back in the swing of things and these neighbors don't even take the time to get to know me. thanks for the reply.

Maybe they're staring because they can't believe what a gimp can do. I surprise a lot of people around here, too,,,,, but none have made any cracks,,, except the ones about " how brave you are" and " I'd never be able to handle it like you".

Personally, I hate those worse than not being spoken to, at all.

I used to have a neighbor who would always want to pop in at the most inconvenient times. I could only stand so much. She would go on and on about all sorts of things I really didn't want to hear about. I fixed the situation. Every time she would "pop in" I would put her to work. After a while, she didn't pop in any more! Maybe you should hand your neighbor a broom or a mop or a leaf rake or something like that?
Good luck with your studies!

How do your neighbors know you collect from the gov't? I'd also tell them to F-Off. They don't know your entire circumstances.

My hubby works 2 - 3 days a week and still receives SSDI, which has different rules than SSI or Retirement. We've been fighting SSA for 3 years now to get them to stop trying to stop payments and collect over $9,000 they say he was overpaid. Back when he started working part-time, there was hardly any info on the SSA website to let you know what you can or can't do while collecting SSDI.

On top of that, he was told the same wrong information by reps over the phone. What we figured out after we were finally told SSA can't count income paid that wasn't earned by actually working such as vacation, sick, travel reimbursements, etc. and also what expenses can be written off, he wasn't overpaid at all. Unfortunately, as many times as they've stopped a month here and there, they've already gotten half the money and continue to take out $100 per month until we get a hearing, which was suppose to take place by now. The case worker assigned to hubby's case was constantly out sick and never returned one phone call in 2 1/2 years and the hearing was denied by a judge b/c the caseworker didn't do her part in the process. So now we're back to filing for a hearing again and we have a different caseworker.

My husband really can't work enough hours to replace his SSDI, so the local office told him to cut his hours to be sure he doesn't go over. You should do whatever you feel you can do. Some people can't find jobs that pay them enough or they don't have the stamina it takes to work and do without gov't help. Good luck!

Stella ~ You kill me :lmao: But what do you do about the people who like doing the work you give them as long as they have somewhere to go and are always drinking your beer? In STL, I dealt with guys coming over on weeknights b/c they couldn't drink at their house, so they'd come over to do a project and stay until after midnight, drinking beer and blasting the music when I had to work the next day :w00t: Quite a few times, I had to go down in the basement and yank a few fuses out of the fuse box to let them know I was pissed and it's time to go home!

I don't know. Hapa,,, but if thry're close enough to call friends, they're close enough to take being told to get the F out.

Or,, maybe that's why I don't have any friends.

Hapa, just flash the lights like they do at closing time at K-mart!! Either that, or start cocking the shot gun. I prefer the latter.
