I have been intermittent cathing for about 3 years now. Lately I have been experiencing significant resistance right at the entry to the bladder(sphincter). This normally occurs when it it full or after drinking something diuretic. I have to remove the catheter and relube it and eventually "get it in." Sometimes I do force it somewhat.
Another symptom is it wants to push back out if I dont really hold it in. Before it would stay in on its own while draining.
Any ideas??? thanks

When the catheter reaches the sphincter, try holding pressure against it for a minute or two. The sphincter will weaken and let the catheter pass. I read about this and tried it and it really works.
Good luck,

I had an episode a year or so back where this resistance happened and my mind went into disaster fantasy. Changing position sometimes helped, slouch more or something. Anyway, it was only temporary and no problems since.
However, as a precaution you might consider getting the doc to check your prostate. Better checked than sorry later.

I get the same problem at times. It gets more and more difficult. I switch to a indwelling for a week and then all is fine for a few months. The pattern has repeated itself several times. Don't know what the cause is.
this worked for me, I had that kind of resistance for about one month.
I am asking for more right on how to do way with the indwelling catheter..?

I've been IC'ing for going on 4 years now. I've ALMOST ALWAYS encountered resistance from the sphincter muscle. It's a normal occurance for me. Sometimes when it's really strong, I pull it back out just a couple centimeters, then put it back in. And, as was suggested by another post, hold it in for as long as it takes for the cath to pass through the sphincter.

Hey buddy i get that too. I some times have to use 2 caths to get in. I THINK its due to swelling. Its happened to me before but i usually switch it up between sizes of caths and it works. Urologist says its perfectly normal for this to happen. Instead of putting lube on the cath, put it on the tip of your penis so the lube goes on the outskirts when it enters the urethra. That helps me out too.
