Lol, pretty good. I gotta think of a few ready responses for the next time someone says 'So you're in a wheelchair?' Maybe we could get a thread going about how people have or should reply, with a title for the best one each month ;).

I had an old guy ask me if I need help getting into my car one time after shopping at Trader Joe's (it's always at Trader Joe's for some reason...) Anyway, after I politely declined the offer he just stood there watching me. Totally freaked me out. I just wanted to shoo him away.

Also, it would have been great if the two old crazies in your story wandered back to their car parked in a handicapped spot. That would have been awesome.
Whenever I'm getting into my car and people ask me if I need help, I just smile and say " yeah, you can pay my mortgage for a year". They usually get the point and can have a laugh at the same time.

Here's an example that crosses all barriers.

A younger fella was trying to give a woman of accumulated years a compliment.

He couldn't figure out why she seemed unhappy with him.

I said, "Tony, you added three words too many."

He fell for the hook and asked which three words.

"When you tell a lady that they're looking good NEVER add the words '-for your age-' unless you want a beer dumped in your lap!"

Moral... Don't add qualifiers of any kind to a compliment or comment.
