So I'm about four and a half years post-injury, but I still haven't gotten around to driving with hand controls yet - I just turned 16 last year, so I don't have a license yet. My question is, can a car be retrofitted with hand controls and still be used by an AB person? Because there probably isn't going to be a car that's specifically mine yet, so if possible we'd get either my dad's or my sister's car retrofitted with hand controls.

Yes, they can be driven by you or an AB. I love to drive my car but my hubby also drives it quite often because it saves much more gas than our van. Have fun!!

Yes, but I will caution you that certain parts are actually illegal in regular cars, specifically hand knobs. And its a tad on the expensive side as far as I've heard to have it installed.

I'm not a veteran on cars but just make sure to get it checked out.

Considering the situation, it might be to everyones advantage to buy a good set of portable hand controls. You'd have the freedom to use whichever car is available and even though ABs can drive cars that have hand controls-they're very intrusive in some cars and could make things uncomfortable or even unsafe in emergencies.
