My Mother in Law is currently in an extended care facility, she is 62 and in frail condition, a C2 incomplete injury quad, we have been trying to get he approved for 24 hour PCA care as she will be living alone. We were told the best she would get would be 12 hours a day, max. Now we have not heard back and we are afraid that they may come back and say she can not leave the extended care facility (nice word for crappy nursing home) Can they do that? Has anyone been in a similar situation? I'm hoping her age is not playing a factor? It all doesn't seem fair!!

i dont think its fair. i think the key is her getting out of their first. Let me explain. I'm a c5/c6 quad and i was staying with my mom. It wasant until i moved out i started getting hours. The thing about hours ''for me anyway';' is that you dont recieve them all at onetime. I STARTED out with 6 hours a day, then 11,then 18, and now im up to 24 hours a day. Another important thing is family support ''in louisiana'' if they figure you have family support they will not help you nearly as much. My advice to you would take her out care facility and move her in her home and start off with the 12, and then request more hours explainin that you dont have time to care for your mom ''knowing that you will do for her'' but they need to feel like no one can help her...eventually she will at least get close to 24hours a day....
